Steve Hindt passed away unexpectedly, on Monday, October 27, 2014 at the age of 59. Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, October 31, 2014 at 11:00am with visitation from 9:30-11:00am, all at Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation, 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake. Reverend Les Svendsen will preside. Steve will be laid to rest at Spring Lake Cemetery, Prior Lake.

Steven Allen Hindt was born on August 17, 1955 in Blue Earth, MN to parents, Marion and Ardene (Gaul) Hindt. He was the second oldest to siblings Mary Jo, Linda and Richard. He spent most of his early days growing up in the Apple Valley area, graduating from Rosemount high school.

After attending St. Cloud State University, he managed the parts department at Wilroy Ford in Rosemount, until he found his true love, being a carpenter. He decided to venture off on his own, and started Steve’s Custom Carpentry, where he spent nearly 40 years of building and remodeling homes. During that same period, he worked for over 10 years as a grounds man for Northwest Airlines.

In 1979, Steve received a bowling ball as a Christmas gift from his mother. He needed to get his hand fit for the bowling ball, so he and his friend, Ed Buckley, went into a sporting goods store and met the gal who would do the fitting. Her name was Lori Kjos, who was working at this sporting goods store while attending school. Following the fitting, Ed said to Steve, you’ve got to go back and get her phone number……..and on September 20, 1980, Steve and Lori were married at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake. Soon after, their life was full, as they brought two beautiful boys into this world, Nicholas and Tracy.

Steve thoroughly enjoyed his boys, especially when it came to baseball. He coached them from young on, and one of the highlights was managing Tracy’s 12 year old team when they had the opportunity to play baseball in Cooperstown. He was a long time coach and served on the board of directors for New Market baseball.

He and Lori enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, canoeing and taking road trips to various state parks. Being a car racing enthusiast, he and his brother Rich spent many weekends racing their two Mustangs at Brainerd International Raceway. Steve also relished his high school buddies, especially their semi-annual trips, which were winter ice fishing on Lake Mille Lacs and their summer golf trips.

A devoted husband, father, a great friend to many and a man who would give you the shirt off his back, Steve will be deeply missed by his wife, Lori; sons, Nicholas Hindt of Bloomington, Tracy Hindt of Lakeville; parents, Marion and Ardene Hindt of Story City, IA; sisters, Mary Jo (Griff) Lavik of Greensboro, GA, Linda (Kevin) Bottorff of Ellsworth, IA.

Steve is welcomed to heaven by his brother, Richard Hindt.

Condolence from Lloyd Johnson on October 30th, 2014 10:57 am

Dear Family:
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am Gary Johnson’s brother ( a year under Steve and Gary ) I also am somewhat of a car buff – and vividly remember Steve’s Ford Rancharo from the early 70’s. I can always picture him in his Letterman’s jacket driving the Rancharo. My prayers to you all and may Steve be looking down on you from heaven and send you his blessing with the Lord.

Lloyd Johnson , Rosemount class of 1974

Condolence from Louie LiVecche on October 31st, 2014 8:39 am

Lori & family,
Very sorry to hear about Steve. I worked at NWA with Steve where I learned of his
carpentry skills. Steve built my 4 season porch which is the envy of anyone who
sees it. Steve and I coached against each other for several years in LBA. I admired
his easy going coaching style which benefited Nick, the rest of the team, and any one who coached against him. He will be missed by many and I will be reminded of him
every time I walk into the room built by Steve Hindt.
I will always be grateful for having crossed paths with your husband and father.

Condolence from Kent McDonough on November 10th, 2014 6:03 pm

Hi Lori – I am so sorry to hear about Steve’s passing away – I just heard about it last night from Wayne Rahn – many fond memories playing softball with him on Phil’s Auto Body team (except for when he was in left field and I was in left center and he let me run into that 4 foot fence in Rosemount and I bruised ribs! actually we laughed about that as long as I knew him) My prayers are with you and your family – Kent
