Rick Gulstad

Rick Gulstad was born on June 23, 1959 in Jamestown, ND to parents Stanley and Violet (Bredahl) Gulstad. He was the middle child of five children. Rick’s childhood years were spent in Glenfield, ND where he developed a strong work ethic doing farm work with his siblings on their family farm. He was proud that he and two of his brothers made up three of the starting five on their high school basketball team. He was also proud of placing second in the Midwest regional free throw competition.

Following his graduation from Glenfield High School, Rick went on to further his education and eventually received his Masters degree in Petroleum engineering from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Rick was the first member of his family to graduate from college. Most of Rick’s career was spent as a compliance engineer in the pipeline industry working both for the federal government and in the private sector.

On a wintry night in 1986, he helped a young lady shovel her car out of a snow bank and was persistent to find out more about her. From that evening on, he and Terri courted for a few years and were eventually united in marriage in 1990 at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, ND. They were blessed with two children, Jake and Emily.

Rick loved watching the Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves; playing cards and betting on the horses at Canterbury. He had a love/hate relationship with home improvement projects but was always determined to finish each endeavor. He enjoyed family vacations when they traveled to locations like Boston and Washington, DC where there was always history to take in. He knew all of the presidents names in order and could tell facts about each one. He loved that he and his daughter Emily shared the same birthday.

At the age of 53 and a resident of Prior Lake, Rick unexpectedly passed away on September 18, 2012.

Rick will be deeply missed by his wife, Terri Gulstad; children, Jake and Emily; mother, Violet Gulstad; siblings, Gary (Charlotte) Gulstad of Glenfield, ND, Ron Gulstad of Glenfield, ND, Karen (Steve) Busek of Bismarck, ND, Craig Gulstad of Glenfield, ND and many other loving relatives and friends.

Rick is preceded in death by his father Stanley Gulstad.

Rick’s pallbearers will be Bradley Gulstad, Ryan Gulstad, Josh Gulstad, Lucas Gulstad, Jeffrey Busek, and Jordan Busek.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Michael, Prior Lake, with visitation from 8:30-10:30 a.m. also at the church. Father Tom Sieg will preside. Rick will be laid to rest at St. Michael Catholic cemetery, Prior Lake.

The Gulstad family is served with honor, care and compassion by Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Prior Lake Chapel.
