Richard Lee Kennicott, of Shakopee (formerly of Florida & Michigan), went to his heavenly home on July 12, 2018 at the age of 76. A Celebration of Life Service is Monday, July 16, 2018 at 7:00 PM with visitation one-hour prior at Living Water Christian Church (911 Shakopee Ave. E.) in Shakopee. Richard’s son, Mark Kennicott, will preside, and Richard’s family will act as flag and urn bearers. Military Honors will be provided by the Shakopee Veteran Honor Guard.

On April 2, 1942, Wayne and Velma (Finn) Kennicott welcomed their son into the world. Richard was the middle of three children, and he loved growing up in Chesaning, Michigan with his siblings Judy and Kim. Richard’s father died while Richard was in high school. This was hard for Richard, but he always had a strong faith that helped him through tough times.

After graduating from Chesaning High School, Richard enlisted in the Air Force. He bravely served his country during the Vietnam War. Richard was a clerk in Okinawa, and he was always so proud of his military service.

During his time abroad, a neighbor wrote to him. She felt bad for him being so far away from home and encouraged her niece, Lynn Ross, to start writing him as well. Lynn and Richard became pen pals and their friendship grew; however, the first time they met in person, they realized they were opposites and weren’t very fond of each other. But they continued exchanging letters and eventually a love blossomed. Lynn graduated from high school in June, Richard was honorably discharged in October, and they were married in March. In true Richard fashion, he proposed by asking Lynn if she’d like to wash his underwear. She couldn’t turn down an offer lake that, so they were married on March 11, 1967.

Their marriage was blessed three wonderful children, Steve, Mark and Deanna. As a family, they enjoyed being outdoors. They liked fishing, canoeing, and camping. They’d even go camping in their backyard, just so they could spend time together as a family.

After 15 years of marriage, Richard and Lynn went their separate ways. They always remained close, and both were dedicated parents. They celebrated holidays together and Lynn even cared for Richard while he was recuperating from a surgery.

Richard worked hard to support his family. He was very proud of the work he did at Disney World. For 30 years, Richard was a laborer in the central shops department. He was always a hard worker and treasured the friendships he made on the job. Richard also enjoyed the perks that came with his work. He’d get family and friends into the parks and was always happy to show them the magical world of Disney.

In retirement Richard reconnected with the love of his life. After being separated for 25 years, Richard and Lynn exchanged wedding vows again on December 29, 2007. They were happy to be together again to enjoy time with their children and grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Richard had many hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Richard watched a lot of football and even played basketball in his younger days. He was an avid motorcyclist and loved spending time on the open road. Although he had many interests, the most important thing in his life was his faith. Richard had a servant’s heart, and all he did was for the glory of God. Richard served many years as an usher at Souls Harvest Church in St. Cloud, Florida. He was often the first one to arrive, and the last one to leave. He loved the other members of the congregation and set an example as a man of true faith.

Richard’s strong faith gives his family comfort knowing that he is home in Heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Richard will be remembered always by his loving wife, Lynn Kennicott; children, Steve (Darcea Hensel) Kennicott, Mark (Zulmita) Kennicott, Deanna (Chuck) Cruikshank; grandchildren, Celia, Cynthia, Krystal, Sean, Andrea, Aaron, Zachary, Joshua, Elena and Elisa; great-grandson, Cayden; siblings, Judy Daniels and Kim (Jan) Kennicott; other loving relatives and friends. Richard was greeted in Heaven by his parents, Wayne & Velma Kennicott.
