Hill Philip

Philip “Jim” Hill passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Friendship Manor in Shakopee. A visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM all at The Parish of Saints Joachim and Anne, Church of St. Mark, 350 Atwood St. South, Shakopee. Philip will be laid to rest at Shakopee Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers for Philip will be Brad Anderson, Dan Anderson, Dave Anderson, Tom Hill, John Hill, and Kristian Grimaldi.

Philip was born December 1, 1926, the oldest of three children to Raymond and Rosalia (Philipp) Hill. Growing up in Shakopee next the railroad depot, Philip loved to watch the trains and meet the people coming and going. He received the nickname “James Hill of the Railroad,” after the railroad tycoon. The nickname was later shortened to Jim, which stuck with him, and was how he was known to many local residents and family members.

After serving in the United States Navy, Philip received his degree from the University of Minnesota—Carlson School of Management. He then began his lifelong career with the Honeywell Corporation.

An avid swimmer, Philip spent many hours teaching children to swim at the Minneapolis YMCA. He also enjoyed spending time at his property on Prior Lake and swimming the many miles of the lake. In the winters, he spent his time in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Philip is preceded by his parents, Raymond and Rosalia (Philipp) Hill; his siblings, Robert (Kay) hill and Winifred (Charles) Anderson; also his longtime friend Rosemary LaBounta.

He is survived by nieces and nephews, Tom Hill, John (Sarah) Hill, Anne Hill, Karen (Pete) Galvin, Brad (Karla) Anderson, Susan (Jim) Fletcher, Daniel (Anna) Anderson, and David (Dana) Anderson; and his lifelong Shakopee friends.

We had many good old belly laughs over the years. I’m going to miss you Jim, you were a “good egg!”

Condolence from Betsy Brown Theis on December 27th, 2016 10:10 pm

I enjoyed visiting with your Uncle at Friendship Manor while my Dad, Gene Brown, was a resident there, too. He was an avid reader and enjoyed the books I would get for him from the public libraries. He was a fun and really interesting man. Rest in peace, Mr. Hill.

Condolence from Gene and Cathy Simpkins on December 30th, 2016 4:55 pm

We enjoyed visiting with Phil while he was at Friendship Manor, and we were there for my sister Pat Fitzpatrick. He really stayed on top of things, reading the newspaper every day and visiting with other residents, etc. Our son, Patrick, really enjoyed his chats with Phil and also thought a lot of him. He seemed to be a happy and congenial person. We’re sorry about his passing.
