Pat’s life story

Pat Delbow

With the husband at her side on the afternoon of Friday, November 1, 2013, Patricia Pearl Delbow, age 84, entered God’s arms at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Shakopee, MN. The family will greet guests on Tuesday, November 5, from 4-7 pm at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 833 South Marschall Road, Shakopee and also one hour prior to the mass at the church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, November 6 at 11 am, at the Parish of St. Joachim and Anne (St. Mark Church) 350 Atwood Street, Shakopee. Father Thomas Merrill will preside. Her son, Kevin will be the urn bearer. Pat will be laid to rest at Shakopee Catholic Cemetery.

On a farm east of Shakopee, Pat was born on August 22, 1929, to parents Mathew and Sadie (Anderson) Schmidt. Pat’s childhood memories include sitting on the front porch with her Grandpa Anderson and riding her bike to town. She attended catholic grade school and later graduated from Shakopee High School.

At the age of 18, Pat married Gilbert “Gib” John Delbow on January 26, 1948, at the Church of St. Mary, in Shakopee. They were blessed with three children, Linda, Brenda and Kevin. Pat’s life was focused around being a wife and mother. Her family meant the world to her. As a family, they enjoyed vacationing on the north shore each summer. Pat enjoyed watching her children at the school activities and sporting events. As a couple, they have fond memories going down town Shakopee with family and friends, enjoying each other’s company.

For 60 years, Pat lived her life in a wheel chair. Most people looked at the wheel chair as a challenge…she did not. Pat handled this physical challenge with grace, the more diversity she faced in life the stronger she became. At first, Pat would often say, “I do not have time to worry about it, I have three children to raise.” Later on, she would just reply, “I am so lucky!” “She viewed one of her challenges in keeping her castle clean. Pat was known to have the cleanest house in Shakopee. She was also known for excelling in the kitchen as a cook and baker. From spring to fall, Pat was always tending to her garden, hoeing the weeds, and later canning the fruits of her labor. To her, those where life’s challenges.

Living life to the fullest, Pat loved to play cards, especially Flume. She enjoyed Sunday afternoons sipping on Manhattans and being surrounded by family. With a love for knitting, Pat has created over 100 Afghans, which she has giving to many family and friends, over the years. A talented seamstress, she loved to sew, just about anything and wear them proudly. But life became complete for Pat when she became a grandma. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of them.

A loving, caring and generous wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma, Pat was in creditably strong and determined. Deeply missed and remembered always by those who loved Pat, husband, Gib of Shakopee; daughter, Brenda (Charlie) Fonder of Shakopee; son, Kevin (friend Deb) Delbow of Eden Prairie; grandchildren, Jeff (friend Melissa) Fonder, Taylor (Heather) Wells, Eric (Jillian) Fonder, Corey (Katrina) Fonder, Emily Wells (friend Nick); great-grandchildren, Baylee Wells, Natalya Wells, Anna Fonder, Emily Fonder, James Fonder, Madison Fonder; son-in-law, Byron Wells, brother-in-law, Joe Schommer; other special relatives and faithful friends.
