Michael Ramirez, of Shakopee, entered eternal life on December 13, 2023, at the age of 52. He was a loving and generous man who lived a joyous life. He will be missed by so many.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM with a time of gathering from 9:30 to 10:45 AM at Pax Christi Catholic Community (12100 Pioneer Trail) in Eden Prairie. Father Bill Murtaugh will preside, and Michael will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Eden Prairie.

On June 27, 1971, Michael was born in Queens, New York. He grew up in the Sunnyside neighborhood with his loving mother, who taught him the values of hard work and strong faith. Michael was surrounded by music and good food, which he appreciated throughout his entire life. He always maintained strong ties to his Colombian family.

At the age of 10, Michael began working as a box boy at his mother’s job. He was quickly promoted to salesman as he had a natural ability to connect with people. Because of his hard work, he was able to buy himself a boombox, which allowed him and his friends to start a breakdancing crew on the streets of Queens.

Michael attended Aviation High School, where his passion for aviation blossomed. He brought that passion to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he graduated with an engineering degree in 1994. His military service and education were a tremendous source of pride for Michael. He loved his country and was proud to serve.

While in college, Michael met the love of his life, Jodi DeMartelaere. They started dating sophomore year and have been inseparable ever since. They exchanged wedding vows in Detroit Lakes on October 6, 1995. They started their life together in Los Angeles, where Michael and Jodi served on active duty. Michael was proud to have worked as an Acquisitions Officer for the NAVSTAR GPS Joint Program Office, helping to install the first generation of satellites.

Michael and Jodi settled in Shakopee to raise their three wonderful sons, Tyler, Christian, and Sam. Michael was the proudest dad, present for every moment and always there for whatever his family needed. He taught his sons the values of integrity and happiness. As a family, they enjoyed sharing meals with the people they loved, hosting dance parties in the basement, and traveling. There was never a dull moment with Michael; life with him was exciting and warm.

The Ramirez family became members of Pax Christi Catholic Community in Eden Prairie. Michael’s faith was central to his life, and he cared deeply about sharing it with his family. He lived out his faith not only in church, but in his everyday life; he treated everyone with unconditional kindness.

Michael was a man of the world. He enjoyed sharing his Colombian heritage, and experiencing new countries and cultures. He felt blessed that his career sent him all around the world. Over the years, he worked in sales for the pharmaceutical, wastewater treatment, and medical device industries. He loved the amazing people he met through work, all of whom enriched his life.

In 2002, he entered the Air Force Reserves. He dedicated countless hours to empowering young people in his volunteer position as a U.S. Air Force Academy Admissions Liaison Officer in the Twin Cities area. He officially retired in 2016 after 20 years of service to our country and to his alma mater. He exemplified the virtue of service before self.

Throughout Michael’s life, God and family were the most important things to him. He loved bringing people together and was full of joy. Michael made friends wherever he went. Anyone he met quickly became family, calling them brother, sister, son, and daughter. He set a wonderful example for his family, and he will be deeply missed.

Michael will always be cherished by his loving wife, Jodi Ramirez; sons, Tyler, Christian, and Samuel Ramirez; mother, Marlene (Carlos Aguilar) Ramirez; other loving relatives and so many dear friends. Michael was greeted in heaven by all of his family and friends who have gone before him.

Memorials can be made in Michael’s honor to Folds of Honor Foundation or Prevent Cancer Foundation.

To the Ramirez family, I hope that God gives you peace through this difficult time. Michael was a friend, colleague and a mentor to myself. We would FaceTime at least once or twice a month and he would listen to me, no matter how big or small my problem seem to be. I knew that he would shoot me straight and talk me off the ledge when I needed it.I will definitely miss those talks and chats we had. I would also like for you to know how he loved to talk about his family. He always expressed his love for his wife and how proud he was of all his boys. Rest in peace brother, you will be missed greatly .

Condolence from Mark Haehn on December 16th, 2023 5:56 am

Michael about eight years ago at one of our conventions. He always had a bright smile and a warm handshake enjoyed his conversations, especially how proud he was of his family. We know he will be missed. Yet, we know he’s out there watching over us. This moment reminds me of a lyric. “ the leader of the band is tired, and his eyes are growing old. His blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man I’m just a living legacy to the leader of the band.” by America

I will forever treasure the time I was able to spend with Michael. He was such a gentleman, a fellow Air Force Officer and above all the husband, dad, son and role model for all men to emulate. Words alone can’t express the love he shared. I never in million years thought he would be gone from this earth in days of being told he was very ill. The Ramirez family included my family in their busy lives. Michael called me Aunt Mary, a title I will always cherish. RIP Michael.

As our sons grew up together, we’ll always be grateful for the countless rides, sleepovers, magnificent meals and most importantly positive influence Michael provided the boys with over the years. Dear Jodi and Ramirez Family, Please accept our families’ deepest sympathies on the tragic loss of Michael. We knew and respected Michael when he worked in the environmental field. We all shared a military “culture” with Michael and our youngest son, Brian, also attended AFA. You guys attended Brian’s wedding dinner as well with our family many moons ago. Michael was a wonderful, sensitive “people person”, a great husband, father and patriot. He shall be greatly missed by all of us but he dwells in the house of the Lord forever. GOD bless you and your family. Peace & Shalom, Miles & Cheri Cohen & Family, Eden Prairie, MN

We send our heart-felt prayers and blessings to the Ramirez family. We were shocked to learn this news, as I’m sure everyone was. This just isn’t something anyone thinks will happen. Michael was a bright light in the USAF and in the ALO program where I worked with him. He left his signature on so many in the program, both in the liaison officers he worked with, as well as the candidates that he interacted with. He always had an upbeat attitude and worked to find solutions to any problem. May he rest in peace at home with the Lord, and I thank his family for sharing him with us and letting us get to know him. Blessings on all of you.

QEPD Michael

Condolence from Julie Van Roy on January 16th, 2024 10:16 am

Michael was my customer, but also my friend. I was his barber until I moved out of Minnesota. He loved his family so much! I remember him talking about Jodi and his boys and how proud he was! I also remember us talking about the most important part of life, our Lord. I’m shocked he’s gone. He was a person that just made every place better with his presence, a true friend. He was a person who always fought on the side of goodness, truth, family, and love. Outside of haircutting we’d talk the entire time. I went through some personal stuff and like a big brother or young Uncle he advised me, but advised me through that wonderful goodness and love of God he always had. I hurt for his family and truly we should all hurt for the world because we certainly lost one of the very best. My sympathies.
