Joan Carol Luhmann, age 79 of Shakopee, passed away on March 31, 2014, at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, MN. She was born on June 6, 1934, in Mankato, MN, the daughter of Theodore and Florence (Envik) Kleist. She married Howard Summer Luhmann of Le Center, MN, on November 22, 1952, in Algona, Iowa.
Joan was an independent person who “marched to her own drummer.” She enjoyed meeting with friends in Shakopee for coffee and listening to music at local venues. As a result of watching local and international news channels, she was always up-to-date on current events. She was well known for her jewelry, which she sold at in-home parties many years ago, and her doll collection, as well as her compassion for animals. Later in her own life, she cared for both of her parents and for her husband.
Joan is loved and will be missed by her children, Debra (Robert) Schmitz of Shakopee, MN, Mark (Judy) Luhmann of Rockford, MN, and Eric (Oksana) Luhmann of Kyiv, Ukraine; grandchildren, Erin, Chris, Andrew and Ryan; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Howard; parents, Theodore and Florence; and brother, Jerome.
In order to permit her family to assemble in MN this summer, a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014, at 11:00 AM, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 833 S. Marschall Road, Shakopee, MN. Following a luncheon at the funeral home, an interment service will be held at 2:00 PM at Fort Snelling National Cemetery during which both Joan and Howard will be interred. A motorcade will depart the funeral home to Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
