Jeff Mitchum, a beloved son, brother, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 13th in St. Louis Park, at the age of 53, after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Jeff spent his formative years in Des Moines, Iowa, where he attended Johnston High School. Jeff found his calling in service and protection, which led him to a distinguished career spanning over two decades at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, where he served with honor and distinction as a police sergeant.

His deep commitment to this role expanded beyond the Fed. He was passionate about firearms and gun safety, leveraging his expertise to establish the successful business, Tactical Yeti, dedicated to providing comprehensive gun safety training.

Jeff had a variety of interests that brought him joy and fulfillment. A devout fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Jeff found camaraderie and excitement in following his favorite team. He also enjoyed putting together and playing on Men’s softball teams.

Those who knew Jeff will remember him for his infectious sense of humor and unwavering loyalty. His friends fondly recall his ability to bring laughter into any situation and his steadfast support in times of need.

Jeff leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Cera, who meant the world to him, as well as his older sister, Michelle Applegate (Doug), and younger brother, Timothy Mitchum (Megan). He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mary Butcher Mitchum and Ronald Mitchum.

In honoring Jeff’s memory, let us carry forward his spirit of loyalty, humor, and dedication to the well-being of others. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

God watch over Jeff.
Guide him where he needs to be.
Watch over his family and friends.
Remind him to check in on all of us from time to time.
In your name, Amen.

I worked with Jeff for a decade and can confirm that he is one of the smartest, most humble, loyal, and selfless public servants that I have ever met. Jeff was a person of integrity, professionalism, and the ultimate protector. Jeff loved Tactical Yeti Defense and Training, but most importantly the very idea of training others to protect themselves and their loved ones. I had the honor and true privilege of working alongside Jeff on multiple specialty units and must say that he was a natural born leader that everyone looked to for advice and strong leadership abilities.

Jeff always spoke so highly of his amazing daughter Cera and how great of an artist and person she is. Cera, know that your dad loved you deeply and is so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. As I write this message, I am reminded of so many awesome memories that I shared with Jeff. I will forever be grateful for his friendship and mentorship.

Until we meet again my brother, rest easy Sir! God Speed
