James B. Hannaman Sr., a 59-year resident of Savage, passed away at the age of 82 at the VA medical Center on Friday, February 17, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2:00 Pm with visitation one-hour prior at South Blue Earth Church in Bricelyn, Minnesota. A gathering of friends and family will be Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation in Prior Lake. James will be laid to rest at the South Blue Earth Cemetery.

On June 23, 1934 in Blue Earth, MN, Emil and Emma (Humberg) Hannaman celebrated the birth of their son, James Benjamin Hannaman. During the Korean War, James served as a mechanic on an Essex-class air craft carrier. Upon returning to the states, James worked at Green Giant in Savage for almost 40 years. He also served in the Savage police reserves from 1965-1972.

In the 70s, James became involved with the Boy Scouts of America. His involvement was one of the most meaningful, important aspects of his life. He served as the Assistant Scout Master for the Savage Boy Scout Troop #445. James utilized his talents, specifically woodworking and sculpting, to benefit the scouts. At fundraisers, he would auction his crafts—his carved pipestone peace pipes being in popular demand.

Unable to stay idle in his retirement, James took every opportunity to help his neighbors, friends, and church with projects. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James’ generosity and kind attitude will be remembered forever by his wife, JoAnn B. Hannaman; children, Anthony Hannaman, Mary Welch, James Jr. (Diane) Hannaman, Curt (Mary) Hannaman; grandchildren, Krystina Hannaman, Jozy Brink, Elizabeth (John) Prechel, Josh Hannaman, Kyle Welch, Alex Hannaman, Timothy (Casandra) Hannaman; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Prechel, Ronan Prechel; siblings, Marian Hagel, Caroline (Paul) Heidorn, Fritz (Ginny) Hannaman, Anna Vanderpool; many relatives and friends.

Preceded in death and there to welcome James home are his parents; brothers, Paul (Fran)Hannaman and Richard Hannaman.

Condolence from Gerald J. Meyer on February 24th, 2017 4:01 pm

Dear Jo Ann and family,
My deepest sympathy on the passing of your dear husband, father, & grandfather. What a special person he was and a joy to be around. I worked with JB (as I always called him) at our favorite Green Giant Container Operations at Savage, MN for many years. JB was a master on operating and adjusting our several multi die can end (lid) presses virtually producing millions of units each production year. I for years was an inspector on the lines dealing with all the prime dimensions such as curl diameter, unit depth, etc. and the good JB was always on top of the operations game. He was a big part of the group that began together in/around 1958 in a new facility that became one of the top can manufacturing operations in the country.
Jo Ann, you and the entire Hannaman family can be proud of this special man and friend to many.
I am so happy he will be laid to rest back in the Blue Earth area-he was proud of his roots.
Blessings always, Gerald J. Meyer
