Jack Lawrence Hunter, age 73, of Prior Lake passed away at home on Sunday, February 9, 2020, after a five-week battle with liver and pancreatic cancer.
Jack was born on May 25, 1946 in Oshkosh, WI, the son of Lawrence and Evelyn (Meyer) Hunter. He was raised on the family farm near Pickett, WI, along with his three brothers. He graduated from Omro High School in the great class of ’64. After graduation, he entered the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. While there, he enjoyed playing football under coach, Otto Graham, as well as sailing on the tall ship, the Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE, during training missions. Other highlights were meeting Walt Disney who visited the EAGLE in CA and marching in LBJ’s Inaugural Parade in 1965. Jack completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering at UW-Madison. He began his career at Ellerbe Becket, and for those 24 years, he traveled throughout the US as well as internationally. He ended his career with Ryan Companies, retiring in 2016. He made many lifelong friends in all those years.
On June 9, 1973 in Omro, WI, Jack married the love of his life, Pamela Miller, and was blessed with three children. They were married almost 47 years. Jack was a devoted husband, proud father and a loving Papa Jack.
Many memories were made camping, skiing and attending Twins games, as well as cross-country road trips, which always included visiting any nearby baseball stadiums. A road trip wasn’t complete without Jack telling the kids, “I’ll stop this car and yell real loud, then you’ll cry.” Usually that garnered ill-concealed laughter! Jack and Pam, as two farm kids from Wisconsin, always felt blessed to be able to travel the country, as well as the world. Jack also loved playing games or cards with friends and family.
A man of deep faith, Jack had a servant’s heart. Along with Pam, Jack made many mission trips to their beloved Haiti, one of which was during the earthquake in 2010. He was a charter member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Prior Lake. For over 20 years, Jack was also involved with Hospitality House Youth Development in North Minneapolis; most recently, as chairman of the board. Whether he was mentoring friends, family or co-workers or serving at his church, Jack believed deeply in sharing his faith.
Jack will always be loved and missed by his wife, Pamela; children, Brad (Cindy) Hunter, Michael (Jessica) Hunter, Lissa (Brian) Golanowski; grandchildren, Ben, Sophie & Violet Hunter, Marinna, Grace & Talia Hunter, Jackson Golanowski; siblings, Ed (Cynthia) Hunter, Chuck (Debbie Gantner) Hunter, Bruce (Wendy) Hunter; brother-in-law Paul “Shorty” (Faye) Miller, sister-in-law Colleen Miller; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jack is reunited in heaven with his parents; in-laws, Paul and Ruth Miller, and brother-in-law, Earl Miller.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 28, 2020 from 4-7:00 pm at Ballard Sunder Funeral Home, 4565 Pleasant St. SE, Prior Lake. A funeral service will be Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 1 pm with pre-service visitation beginning at 11:30 am at Messiah Lutheran Church, 16725 Highview Ave., Lakeville.
Memorials are preferred and will be distributed in Jack’s memory by the family.

Christine and I wish to offer our condolences to Pam and the rest of the Hunter family. I will always remember Jack for all the wonderful times we had working together at Ellerbe and OSM as well as being such a wonderful friend. He had a big impact on my life in a very positive ways. He will always be with me in my heart!
Claudia and I send our deepest sympathies to the Hunter family. Jack was an important aspect of HLMS and it’s work in Haiti. We rejoice now in the knowledge that he is with the Lord, trusting in the resurrection reunion that awaits all those who have died in the Lord. May His comfort and peace be yours. Jack; you beat me to the finish line; but I know you will save a place for me. Our condolences to your family and close friends. We certainly look back on a lot of fond memories growing up on farms and me visiting your family in Minnesota on some of my airline layovers. Wish we could be there to celebrate your life with your family, but distance is a problem.

Although I had not seen Jack for many, many years except once last year; when we met he came up and spoke like he never moved away. He was always a nice, pleasant fella who was easy to talk to and listen to. If we could all be the type of person Jack was, what an improved world we would live. In!

I had the opportunity to work with Jack at Ryan Companies and he was a great mentor and friend. He was a leader who’s wisdom was real and he always had your back. My condolences to his family and many friends.
I have great memories of Jack as a roommate and teammate at CGA , including our great Army/Navy Game walk-on. I enjoyed seeing and talking to him at our 50th … “Once a classmate always a classmate”. On behalf of the Class of 1968, I send condolences to his family and friends.

Jack was a great classmate and football teammate at the Coast Guard Academy. It was great to see him at the 50the reunion.

Jack was a great classmate and teammate while at CGA. I enjoyed his great humor and intelligence. His upper Midwest modesty was refreshing which made it very pleasant to be in his company. I never did understand the card games he imported from Wisconsin but the simply added to his unique persona. His lifetime accomplishments and evidence of love and decency don’t surprise me. They were on display for his classmates back in the 60’s. It was a pleasure to know him for that brief period.
Please accept my deepest condolences. Jack will always be remembered. All my love, thoughts and strength for you and your family.
I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Jack at Ellerbe, and then again when he was at Ryan Companies. To say that he made an impression on me is an understatement. Jack’s charisma made it easy to get to know him, and his decency made it important to know him. I send my condolences and prayers to his family.
I had the pleasure of working with Jack at Ellerbe Beckett early in my career. I fondly remember his strong presence and passion for the profession of architecture and engineering. He will be missed.
Jack you will be missed by many! You always had a smile on your face and welcomed all in your presence. It was always a pleasure to share lunch with you in the Ryan North Woods room. My condolences and prayers to your family and friends.

Pam, I know your heart is heavy. At the same time, I know you’re grateful for his eternal life. My sincere condolences to you, your children and extended family. Keep Jack close in your heart. It’s where it begins and ends. (I’ll always think of you as Pa-mel-ya, although I can’t remember who pronounced your name that way. )
