Grace’s life story

Grace C. Scherer

Grace C. Scherer was born on June 14, 1924 in Spring Lake Township, MN to parents Gregory and Ida (Sand) Boehmer. She was the youngest of three children. Grace’s childhood years were spent in the Prior Lake area where she helped operate her parent’s resort on Spring Lake. Grace also helped with chores on their family farm. She was a graduate of Shakopee High School.

Grace was introduced to Eugene Scherer at a dance at the Spring Lake pavilion. After a period of courtship, they married and parenting was just around the corner. They were blessed with six children, Jerry, Willie, Bob, Ray, Kenny, and Susie.

While raising her children, the farm work continued, as she kept active, working hard on the Scherer farmstead (currently the Willows). She also waitressed and bartended at Rupperts, Hollywood Inn, Craig’s Resort, Wild Outdoors (currently Horse and Hunt), Rendevous and Graves Gay 90’s. She spent the last 16 years of her career handling food service at Ebenezer health Care Center in Burnsville.

Grace loved cooking, tending to her flower garden, shopping at Kohl’s, Friday and Saturday (after 5:00 mass) night dinners at the VFW where she was an auxiliary life member, “minimum gambling” and getting her hair done on Fridays-no matter what the weather was. She had a special love for her grandchildren and their spouses and enjoyed all the family outings, especially holidays.

Known as a loving, hard working woman and “everybody’s grandma”, Grace died at the age of 88 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis on December 11, 2012. A devout catholic, Grace prayed her rosary daily.

Forever loved, Grace will be deeply missed by her daughter, Susie McNeal of Prior Lake; sons, Jerry (Rose) Scherer of Remer, Willie (Donna) Scherer of Prior lake, Ray Scherer of Prior lake, Kenny (Deb) Scherer of Prior Lake; grandchildren, Jeremy (Kristin Puck) Scherer, Jeff (Michelle) Scherer, Matt Scherer, Amber Scherer, Nick Scherer; great-granddaughter, Amber Engelke; sister, Germaine Ryan of Prior Lake; grand dogs, Snoopy, Abby, Ranger, Mia and many other loving relatives and friends.

Grace is preceded in death by husband Eugene Scherer; son, Bob Scherer; parents, Gregory and Ida (Sand) Boehmer; grandson, Scott Scherer; son in law, Jim E. McNeal; sister, Georgette (Don) Hergott and brother in law, Bill Ryan.

Grace’s pall bearers will be Jeremy Scherer, Jeff Scherer, Matt Scherer, Nick Scherer, Kevin Haferman, Mark Petsch and Myles “Butch” Fleeck.

Visitation will be on Friday, December 14 from 4-8 p.m. at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake and one hour prior to the mass at church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, December 15, at 11 a.m., at the Church of St. Michael, 16311 Duluth Ave. SE, Prior Lake. Father Tom Sieg will preside. Grace will be laid to rest next to her husband Eugene at St Michael Catholic Cemetery in Prior Lake.

The Scherer family is served with honor, care and compassion by Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation services, Prior Lake Chapel.
