Butch’s life story

Elmer “Butch” Buckingham

Elmer Louis Buckingham, Jr. was born on December 14, 1938 in Minneapolis to parents Elmer and Rose (Coleman) Buckingham. He was the second oldest of six children. He spent his early childhood years in north Minneapolis before moving to Bloomington at age 10. Soon after the move, he and his siblings were asked to help mom and dad run Costello’s recreational park in Bloomington. He was a 1956 graduate of Bloomington high school. Following high school, Butch joined the Marine Corp, where he proudly served our country.

Butch spent 20 years as a home painter, working for C. T. Eliason painting and later with his brother Jim’s business, Buckingham painting. He had a special love for antique’s and for many years ran his own antique shop called Bits and Pieces. He closed out the last 10 years of his working career at Northstar Auto Auction where he prepped cars.

He was proud of his 33 years of sobriety and being a member of A. A. He was a passionate sponsor of many who participated in the A. A. program. He enjoyed his Harley, taking many motorcycle trips around the area including Sturgis.

A true character, and a man with a soft heart, Butch passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on the afternoon hours of Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina.

He is survived by his son, Tyler; siblings, Mary Lou (Lenny) Bixby of Prior Lake, Jim (Donna Rae) Buckingham of New Prague, Tom (Sue) Buckingham of Prior Lake, Michael Buckingham of Prior Lake; sister in law, Sandy Buckingham of Savage; and many nieces and nephews.

Butch is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Rose (Coleman) Buckingham; brother, Robert Buckingham.

His urn bearer will be his nephew, Jimmy Joe Buckingham.

The Celebration of Life Service will be on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 7:00 p. m., with the visitation from 4:00-7:00 p. m. all at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake. The presider will be Donna Rae Buckingham and military honors will be provided by the Prior Lake VFW honor guard.

The Buckingham family is served with honor, care and compassion by Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation Services, Prior Lake Chapel.
