WEB Dennis Peterson

Dennis Walfred Peterson was born July 24, 1943 in Minneapolis, MN. He died at the age of 77 on August 27, 2020 at his home in Prior Lake.

He was married to Maureen (Murphy) Peterson on December 30, 1972 and they were married for 47 years. Dennis worked as a parochial schoolteacher and in student services/admissions at Normandale Community College for 25 years. He enjoyed photography, oil painting, traveling, gardening, and bird watching. He also loved to spend time finding the best power tool deals at Harbor Freight, eating Chinese at a lunch buffet, or taking long road trips with his friends in the car. One of his favorites places to take his son and grandsons would be Richardson Nature Center. He was kind-hearted and loved to laugh. He was a devoted Catholic, articulate/engaging lector, and went to church every Sunday. He enjoyed relaxing in his recliner, wearing comfy slippers, and finding good car deals on Craigslist.

He was a beloved father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Emmy Flasch Peterson. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Elizabeth Peterson; one son, Matt (Hanna); and two grandsons, Liam (8) and Julian (6).

A private Liturgy of the Word will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Prior Lake with Father Tom Walker presiding. Interment will follow at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and can be sent directly to Maureen Peterson at 4290 Quaker Trail, NE, Prior Lake, MN 55372. She will distribute the memorials in loving remembrance to Dennis’ favorite charities.

Dear Maureen,
I am so sorry to hear of Dennis’ passing. You both were so generous and kind with your time and talent at St. Michaels. Especially during Holy Week and Christmas. I remember many years ago, Easter Vigil, Dennis read the Creation Story from the Music Room, yet miked out to the packed church. An unforgettable, religious experience. God bless Dennis, a good and faithful servant.

Condolence from Stephen Squires on January 9th, 2021 6:08 pm

Mr. Peterson was probably the most influential teacher I had. There are some teacher that leave a mark and make learning and school special fro their students. I have so many special memories — science/geoology classes where we students were presented with special rocks when they identified them, massed where he and Mr Osgood played the guitar, phy ed classed where physical fitness programs were created ans many school records established and tracked and after school gymastic and weight lifting programs he help establish and create. Mr Peterson was responsible for establishing my interest in weight lifting as a hobby which turned into a little more along the way where I was able to reach personal best of a 560# bench press and a 250# preacher curl. I and so many other student were so blessed to have Ms Murphy and Mr Peterson as part of our lives at Saint Richards. I forgot to metion he also worked with student to help him restore a Cessna aorcraft and then hosted students on discovery flights. My sincerest condolences to his family,

Condolence from Jerry Ninteman on February 21st, 2021 10:23 pm

I was having a discussion this evening with my family about favorite teachers when I decided to look up my 5th and 6th grade teacher from Saint Richards Catholic School in 1970-1972. I regret not taking this on about 6 months earlier as I would have told Dennis what a strong and positive influence he had on my life-long interest in geology and the environment, eventually resulting in a career as an environmental engineer. I have always been amazed at how he was able to get our entire class, the boys at least, so strongly interested in collecting rocks and minerals. We used to all bring our collections to school and trade with each other following a geology unit that Dennis taught us. The field trip that he took us on to the limestone bluffs of the Mississippi River to collect fossils is one that I have repeated with my own kids as well as nieces and nephews. Even as a naive 11 and 12 year old, I vividly remember the obvious spark that surfaced whenever I saw “Mr Peterson” and “Ms Murphy” casually interact in the hallways and class rooms of Saint Richards. I’m so happy to hear that they eventually tied the knot and remained happily married all these years. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I was very fortunate to have known Dennis.
