David W. Rusch, age 58 of Prior Lake, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 while surrounded by family. A visitation will be held from 4-7PM on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 16400 Duluth Ave SE, Prior Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 17, 2021 at 11AM with a visitation 1-hour prior at St. Michael Catholic Church.

David will be laid to rest at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in Prior Lake. Father Tom Walker will preside and pallbearers will be David’s nephews—Steven Kieffer, Brian Kieffer, David Diercks Jr., Joe Diercks, John Rusch, Noah Diercks, Michael Diercks, and Nate Johnson.

Livestreaming will be available at St. Michael Catholic Church’s website https://stmichael-pl.org/ and by clicking on the “Mass and Services” tab.

On May 17, 1963 in Red Wing, MN, David Walter Rusch was born to parents Walter and Alice (Nardinger) Rusch. Along with his four siblings, David grew up in Goodhue, MN. Despite the age difference, David had a close-knit relationship with his siblings. Throughout life, he appreciated the value of family.

Following David’s graduation in 1981 from Goodhue High School, he furthered his education at NDSU with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and later an MBA from Oklahoma City University. Diligent and hardworking, David was employed at Seagate in Shakopee for 35 years.

David’s life was enriched when he had a chance encounter with Rosie Walechka at Grand Old Days in St. Paul. A brave man, he attended a Walechka family wedding with Rosie a month into dating. David quickly gained the approval of Rosie’s eight brothers, and the rest is history. On September 18, 2004, David and Rosie were united in marriage. They were blessed with a son Jason.

David wanted to provide his son with experiences that he never had during his own childhood. Supportive and patient, he seldom missed on opportunity to teach Jason a new skill whether it was the value of a good handshake or using excel spreadsheets. With David’s encouragement, Jason participated in Boy Scouts, baseball, and trap shooting.

Despite his diagnosis of cancer, David cherished every moment with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling to Wine Country, hunting, snowmobiling, boating, visiting the cabin, and training his dogs Duchess and Sunny. No matter the activity, David was committed to his motto, “Work Hard, Play Hard.” He embraced his life, the good and the bad, and lived each day fully.

David is loved and missed by his wife, Rosie; son, Jason; sisters, Ila (Paul) Kieffer, Eva (David) Diercks, Lauri (Scott) Johnson; brother, Allen (Margaret) Rusch; mother-in-law, Catherine Walechka; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Jackie) Walechka, Andy (Janet) Walechka, Mike (Cindy) Walechka, Dan (Gale) Walechka, Larry (Gina) Walechka, David (Vicki) Walechka, Rick (Holly) Walechka, Pete (Jenny) Walechka; several nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.

David is reunited in Heaven with his parents, Walter and Alice; nephews, Nick Diercks and Max Diercks; and father-in-law, Louis Walechka.

Dave and I were friends/roommates for 3 years at NDSU in the early/mid 80s. I reconnected with him and the rest of the college gang in about 2007. I can’t begin to count all the great times we’ve had since then. We’ll all miss him dearly – he was a great friend.

Condolence from Robert Albertson on December 14th, 2021 8:04 am

To Dave’s family,

My sincere condolences on the loss of your husband, father, and family member. I had the privilege to work with Dave for many years. He was always a kind and friendly person to work with and the one of the most professional people I have ever worked with. His strength amazed me that he could work so well through his illness. It was easy to forget that he was sick with how well he dealt with it. Although we never really discussed our personal lives I could tell that he loved his family very much. I will miss Dave and pray that you all are comforted during this difficult time

My condolences to the family, this is not at all what I wanted to hear. Working in the same building with Dave for many years, seldom working together on any particular thing, but I was always happy to bump into Dave for a quick chat about things we shared in common. He was a very nice person to be friends with and I already miss him, having not been in the work facility for quite a while I have not had the chance to see him in too long.

Condolence from Andy Steffl on December 14th, 2021 5:52 pm

I am honored to have known Dave for over 40 years. As roommates in college for two years, we shared many conversations, and it was very apparent early on in our friendship that Dave was a man of strong conviction and faith. I feel privileged to be able to have counted Dave as one of a small group of very loyal and treasured friends. He was an extremely intelligent, hard-working man who loved his family deeply. He faced his illness with amazing strength and continued to live life to the fullest through it all, investing his time in the people and activities that mattered most to him. Knowing I had been involved in Scouting with my sons years earlier, Dave was always eager and very proud to share the rapid progress Jason was making towards becoming an Eagle Scout. My deepest condolences go out to Rosie, Jason, and Dave’s extended family. I pray that you are comforted knowing that Dave touched many lives, and that each of those lives were enriched for having known him.

Condolence from Maria German on December 16th, 2021 3:59 pm

Dave is one of the best man in my vendor support team. I was very impressed with the way he worked and supported me quickly. I thank him for his great support over the years. I wish him a wonderful life in heaven and my condolences to his family.

Condolence from CHRIS COOK on December 15th, 2021 10:32 pm

To the Rusch family: I have been a distant work contact of Dave’s, sometimes down the hall or a few cubes away. But for many-many years, I never got over just the sheer courage Dave had to go to battle against being sick and do his job at STX. I’m sure he has his days at home and elsewhere, but Dave, to my memory, never let out a complaint about his sickness while at work. That’s just shows enormous heart and will. I’m grateful to read in the summary and in these comments about Dave’s sustaining faith and beliefs. I’m glad that you can take comfort in this time of loss, to know that it is not a permanent separation; but there is Hope for eyes that see and ears that hear. And I agree with so many comments here; if Dave said it — you can take it to the bank.

Condolence from Mark James Schaenzer on December 16th, 2021 8:02 am

Dave (AKA Wally) was a great friend and such a wonderful person. We met our first year in college in 1981 and then reconnected when he moved back to MN to work at Seagate in Shakopee. I will cherish all the times we spent together, whether it was hunting pheasants in SD, ducks in ND, pontoon rides, bonfires, poker parties, snowmobiling, travelling to Las Vegas, Twins games, and everything else we did together and with our mutual friends. My condolences go out to Rosie, Jason, and family. Everyone that met him, instantly liked him. He will be deeply missed.

I felt blessed to see Dave again at our class reunion this summer. He and I grew up just two doors apart in Goodhue where we learned how to sand box together as children and compete together in cross country as teenagers. I will miss you.

Condolence from Adarsh Kodandapani on December 16th, 2021 8:55 pm

My heartfelt condolences and prayers. I was so shocked to hear on Monday that Dave is no more. I spoke to him just a few days before.
It was my pleasure that I worked with Dave for over 5 years. During my initial days at Seagate, I was invited for a team lunch for successful completion of a product qual. I did not go to this as I am a vegetarian and I thought there wouldn’t be anything for me to eat at the restaurant. Immediately after the lunch, Dave bought a lunch ticket from the cafeteria and came to my cube and gave it to me saying we didn’t find you at the lunch and have this. He made sure I did not miss out. Since then I didn’t miss any invite from Dave and every time he ensured there were vegetarian dishes ordered for the table.
I wanted to share this, I will definitely miss Dave.

Condolence from Brad, Jill, Sam and Anders Elliott on December 18th, 2021 11:18 am

There is so much I’d like to say about Dave Rusch, and I’m not sure my words will ever convey what a great man, husband, father and friend he was. We loved his charming, easy-going personality, yet he was also structured (and sometimes rigid) to make sure everything he wanted to do was done right. We will miss our times hanging out with Rosie, Dave and Jason. The many laughs and good-natured debates over a variety of topics; there were typically a few glasses of beer and wine and a meal involved. Dave taught us how to handle a devastating situation with such grace. The shock of losing Dave so quickly was in part because he never let on to how he was really feeling and the daily struggles his cancer brought to him. He was brave, smart, funny, kind…and oh so loved by our family. We will always remember Dave and he will be forever missed.
Rosie, Jason, and family, we are so deeply sorry for your loss but know our lives are forever richer for getting to know and love Dave. God bless you my friends.

It was wonderful to chat this summer at the class reunion and get updated on his kind family. Prayers and thoughts to each of you… Our loss is heaven’s gain.

Condolence from Eric Gamble on January 3rd, 2022 7:59 pm

I worked with Dave for several years in my role at IBM. I am sad to hear about Dave’s passing. I am extremely blessed to have known Dave and spent time with him over several years. We had many discussions about being a “dad”, and the best part of that was the fact that I only remember us sharing great stories and feelings about that… no complaints, ever. In all of my interaction with Dave, he was positive and remained very positive throughout his life and fight with cancer, and I found tremendous encouragement from him. I will remember Dave as a friend and great person, and my condolences and prayers for family members as you move forward from here.
