Dave Flattem, age 60, of Shakopee, MN, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at his home.
Private family services will be held for Dave with interment at a later date.
David Alan was born on February 20, 1960 to William “Bill” and Patricia “Pat” (Kubias) Flattem in MPLS, MN. Although he was the youngest child of three, there was a big age difference between Dave and his siblings, so he was close with his parents growing up. At a young age, he discovered his love of all things water. He bought his first boat at age 15 and never looked back. Following his high school graduation in 1978 from South High School in S. MSP, Dave attended Normandale Community College and soon started into his lifelong career of sales. After working a few different odds and ends jobs, he landed at Encompass, where he was involved in healthcare sales for over 30 years. About a year ago, he progressed his career and took a position with MIP.
Dave’s life was enriched when he met the love of his life, Lynn Hickey. Quickly after connecting, they started dating and were married a few years later on September 1st, 1984 in S. MPLS. Soon after their marriage, they were blessed with three children, Jake, Matt, and Taylor. Dave passed on his love of the water to his family, eventually settling on Lake O’Dowd in Shakopee. His favorite place in the world was the Whitefish Chain in Crosslake, MN, where their family enjoyed countless family vacations. He was huge into water skiing and boating in the summer, traveling to many different places around Minnesota to enjoy his hobbies with his family. Dave could also be found on the golf course and loved snowmobiling when it was too cold to be out on the boat. Later in life, he was able to be a grandpa for his two grandchildren, Kaden and Keegan, who he loved very much.
Dave was the life of the party. He had an amazing sense of humor and would always pitch in with a witty comment. He was a loyal friend, a great husband, a loving dad, and a fun grandpa.
Dave will be dearly missed by his wife, Lynn; children, Jake Flattem (girlfriend, Chelsey Ludescher), Matt (Kelsey) Flattem, and Taylor (Erik) Molsather; grandchildren, Kaden and Keegan; and other loving relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Pat; and other relatives.

Extremely saddened to hear of Dave’s passing, my condolences to his entire family and friends. Dave and I became friends over the last few years and I can tell you he was one of the best guys I ever met. He talked about his family with love and pride. I will truly miss this man and our conversations about his love for the outdoors, snowmobiling, and our talks about baseball. There is so much more I could say about Dave but to those who knew him and loved him you already know this Man was one of the Best! May he RIP.
Dave was such a wonderful person, A great husband, a great Dad, a great grand Pa , a great friend and a smile that attracted everyone.
He will truely be missed.

I had the privilege of working with and for Dave in the mid 90’s at Lintex. He was full of life and the one person who I would seek out first at sales meetings and trade shows. I mourn his loss with you. You, his family, were so important to him and he was so very proud of each of you.
Lynn and family, many years ago I meet Dave while working for HCIS out of Omaha. He was a fun loving guy and and a voice that could grab your attention :). I haven’t seen or talked with Dave in 20+ years but in reading about his life it seems things never changed, I think he and Berg crashed my wedding back in Omaha in 1992. You know how the Mooney family feels…..he was basically a member of our family as well. For 27 years we shared the good and the bad times…until now so much good versus bad. Raising kids, boat rides, bonfires, swimming .He was the brother I never had….the friend that I knew would take care of Sandy if I couldn’t, the “uncle” that taught our kids to waterski, wakeboard, wakesurf as well as teaching them the motto “look sharp, be sharp”. To us he was larger than life and was a dear, dear friend . Lynn, Jake, Matt and Taylor, we are heartbroken and just sending our love to all of you.

I understand the depth of loss that comes from both unexpected and tragically early loss. While you are walking on a path you did not choose to be on, you will find the way forward and in doing so honor the life and legacy of Dave. He obviously left a great impact on many in his wake. One of the things I was told in those first days of disbelief is that eventually memories will move from being painful reminders of what could have been, to treasured remembrances of what you had. I have found that to be true. Dave’s light shown in the brief interactions we had through shared social connections in Shakopee. My first week at Encompass I traveled to a meeting where I met Dave. His hearty laugh and grin were engaging but they belied the seriousness with which he approached his job. And he was just super nice. I am so sorry for your loss.

Just heard of this…sad news….I have not been in touch with him since leaving Encompass. Dave was my manager at Lintex. I lived in the DFW area and he’d come down to ride with me. Learned a lot from Dave. He was fearless…absolutely fearless. I owe much of my success since then to him. After the day was done, we’d shop for boats and about half the time, he’d buy one and flip it. I spent a lot of time in the car with Dave…to Dave, it was his family, his boys and hockey…and boats. He was a lot of fun and a genuine guy. Prayers to his family.
