I was truly saddened to hear of Darrell’s passing. Our mothers were sisters. Yes, he was my cousin, but he was my “other brother”. In fact, we were closer in age, and in life, than I was to my own brothers.
Our families lived in the same house for several years. His family rented the first floor and our family rented the second floor. Often, the Kleinfeldts would join us in our living room to watch our first TV in the late 40’s. I fondly remember the Ice Man’s truck delivering ice each week, before we had refrigerators. Skip, Darrell, Diane, and I (Butch was too young) would grab ice chips from the back of the truck, then sit on the steps and eat the ice on hot summer days. I also remember Darryl collected pop bottles when he attended the auto races with his Dad. He was about nine years old. He’d load them into his wagon and carry them to the local grocery for the refunds.
Later, when I was in high school, Darrell and I were again very close. I remember helping repair and paint his old Ford. He helped me learn to drive. I remember sleeping in the back seat of his car one night, after a spat with my parents. He was my confidant during my teens.
After the Navy, when I moved to Virginia, we grew apart. We only saw each other at family gatherings. He was always the man I remembered from my youth. Several years ago, when I started researching our ancestry, we reconnected. We exchanged hundreds of emails, discussing family, life and politics.
Barb, I know you, Diane and Terri have many more memories of Darrell than I do. I pray those will provide you and your family some comfort now and as time passes. I know they have for me. He was a good man, I loved him dearly, and now I believe God has taken him to a better place. May God bless and comfort all of you.
