Albert “Tubby” DuBois, a lifelong resident of Shakopee, MN, passed away peacefully three days after his 79th birthday, on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at his home with his family.

Services for Al will be held at a later date.

Albert Arthur DuBois was born on December 26, 1942, in St. Paul, MN, to Arthur and Mary (Cavanaugh) DuBois. He was the younger brother to John and the older brother to Patricia. Tubby attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. When he wasn’t in school, Tub and his friends had many great adventures down by the river, and at times found themselves in a bit of mischief.

After graduating from Shakopee High School, Tubby served in the United States Army from January 6, 1961 – October 21, 1963. Completing his military commitment, he and several friends took their childhood mischievous experiences and applied them in vo-tech for Law Enforcement. Tub started his career patrolling on October 1, 1965, with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. He took to the streets for a brief period and moved into radio dispatching, later becoming instrumental in establishing the 911 system for Scott County. After 31 years, he retired from the force on December 31, 1996, achieving the rank of Lieutenant.

Al married his high school sweetheart, Lorrie Marie Fonnier. They married on September 14th, 1960, in Mason City, Iowa, with their parents at Al and Lorrie’s side. Soon after, they welcomed their first son, Mitchell, and then followed by Rhona and Tony.

The DuBois family remained in the Shakopee area. First living in town, Tubby eventually moved his family out to the country for many years. Here, he loved raising goats and birds, quail, geese, and ducks. In Tubby’s earlier years, he enjoyed hunting birds locally and in Canada with family. In the early 1980’s, Al moved his family back into town, where he and Lorrie remained living.

Tubby loved fishing. Many summers the family would rent a cabin and vacation up north. Eventually, Al and Lorrie purchased cabins in Longville, MN, on Hanging Kettle lake and later in Aikin, MN, on Diamond Lake. These cabins allowed for countless fishing excursions for him and his family.

Tubby had an interesting sense of humor and loved to tease people. Life for him was most enjoyable becoming a grandpa. Al loved his grandchildren and loved spoiling them. Each one had a special place in his heart. As a couple, Al and Lorrie loved taking road trips traveling the United States and vacations to places like Costa Rica. After he retired, Tubby enjoyed breakfasts with the neighbors or with former colleagues. His brother John and him were always very close and would speak daily.

Al’s other love was his dog Molly. Deep down, he also had a compassionate heart for kids in need and in trouble. Al and Lorrie’s doors were always open in hopes of providing some guidance, shelter, and support for these young kids.

Forever loved, Al will be forever missed by his wife of 61-years, Lorrie; children, Mitchell (Lonette) DuBois, Rhona (Clark) Cronquist, Tony (Amy) DuBois; grandchildren, Aaron DuBois, Bryan (Kylee) DuBois, Cameron DuBois, Carson Cronquist, Jacob DuBois, Allie DuBois; great grandson, Colton Laugen; brother, John (Jane) DuBois; brother-in-law, Dave Lindsay; other relatives and friends.

Al is welcomed home in Heaven by his parents, Art and Mary DuBois; granddaughter, Rebecca DuBois; and sister, Patricia Lindsay.

Condolence from Dawn Ganske on January 3rd, 2022 11:41 am

Albert gave me my first big break in life when he hired me as a 911 Dispatcher in 1983. Even though he had a calm demeanor, he had high expectations of us. After all, we had to save lives on a daily basis, while keeping our officer’s safe. Because of his high expectations, we are the best 911 Center anywhere! Thank you for believing in us…. you made us believe! My heartfelt condolences to Lorrie, his family, his friends, and my fellow 911 Dispatchers. Rest in peace, Boss.

Condolence from Julie and Darren Schlueter on January 3rd, 2022 2:58 pm

You will be forever missed Uncle Tub! May you Rest In Peace and give mom a big hug from all of us. My sincere sympathies to Aunt Lorrie and family, God bless you all.

Condolence from R Kathleen Morris on January 3rd, 2022 4:28 pm

Al was a kind person to me when I first came to Scott County as an Assistant count attorney and didn’t make me feel less an attorney because I was female. He always ready to help me and supported me in ways other police officers did not. He will be missed by many and the world is better because of the nice things he did when he was here.

Condolence from Lyn Rohe on January 3rd, 2022 4:36 pm

Al took a chance and hired me as a rookie unexperienced dispatcher in 1982. And became a special man to me who was the best boss I ever had. His door was always open to his dispatchers and he had our backs! Always willing to listen to us when a department had a complaint against our actions as a dispatcher. We butted heads occasionally but I always felt respected and listened to. When I saw him a few years ago, we hugged and he told me I was one of them that made his hair turn grey. One of a kind man. I am blessed to have had him in my life.

Condolence from Brad Bisek on January 3rd, 2022 5:10 pm

To all of my old neighbor pals and Lorrie, my condolences on Tubs passing. He was basically a second dad to me growing up. Pretty sure I took a beating from him once in a while for all the crap Tony and I did, but it was a well-deserved beating that I probably was glad it was him and not my dad. May he rest in peace and sympathies to you all.

Condolence from Stacey on January 4th, 2022 7:15 pm

Tony, so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. Sincere condolences to you and your family!

Condolence from Matt & Rena Lehman on January 4th, 2022 11:44 pm

Al would stop by the shop just to talk about local, state, and national issues. An absolute realist and common sense problem solver. Rena & I will miss him dearly.
Our sincere thoughts, prayers, and condolences to his family and friends.

Condolence from Dave Loftness on January 5th, 2022 8:41 am

Lots of great memories, between work and fishing. Fun loving and terrific sense of humor, but also took the communications from a telephone line to its state-of-the-art emergency communications center!
Condolences and God’s peace to Lorrie, John and the entire family.

Condolence from Tom and Char Howe on January 5th, 2022 1:16 pm

Al and Lorrie have been good friends and neighbors for many years to Char and I. I will miss going to coffee and breakfast with him. We would often verbally abuse each other, (but all in fun). Will miss you, Al. Rest In Peace

Condolence from Jeff Loftness on January 5th, 2022 5:54 pm

I’m so sorry to hear this. I’ll always remember the great times I had as a kid when Al and my dad took Tony & me up north on the fly-in fishing trips. Al had the greatest gear and the funniest stories! Wishes of peace to the family.

Condolence from Barb and Bob Stark on January 6th, 2022 12:26 pm

So sorry to hear about (Tubby) We always called him tubby. I spent 8 years in grade school with him. Usually right behind him. I did daycare for his son Mitch and Lynette 3 boys. Very nice family. I loved taking care of them. I am sure he will be missed by all of his family very much. You have all of our sympathy. The Starks.

Condolence from Marty Coddington on January 6th, 2022 4:02 pm

First, I’d like to ditto everything Lyn said above. Then I have to add: Thanks Al for lifting Lani and myself from the ranks of fired Air Traffic Controllers and restoring us to respectability in the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. In my case, at least, he turned me from a life that was going nowhere to employment that gave me self-respect and many great friends, He was one of them. I will cherish his memory as long as I live.

To Al’s family: I pray the Lord will give you peace, comfort and healing. We all know what a wonderful man you lost and I offer my sincere condolences.

Condolence from Cindy & Madison Sherman on January 7th, 2022 1:01 pm

So sorry to hear about Al. Him and Lori have been great neighbors for many years. We will never forget the time that my daughter Madison was trying to learn how to ride her bike. She slammed it down by the end of his driveway, so Al walks over to the cul-de-sac put $2.00 down, and said ” if you can ride your bike to the money, you can have it!” She did it! Then Al said ” see, women will do anything for money!” That’s our favorite memory of Al. We will certainly miss him.
