Steve Robards, of Portland, Oregon, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 56. He had a big personality and an even bigger heart.

A Virtual Memorial Service was held on Saturday, December 12, 2020. A recording of the service is available at the following link: Steve Robards Memorial Service.

Steve’s Godson and namesake, Hayden Anderson Elliott, will act as honorary urn bearer. Cards, memories and memorials can be shared with Steve’s family c/o Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation (104 First Street West; Jordan, MN 55352). Steve’s family will be making donations in Steve’s honor to his favorite causes.

On November 24, 1964, Stephen Anderson Robards was the only child born to Richard & Janet Robards. Steve was a wonderful blessing to his parents and family. He was always a happy boy and enjoyed growing up in Portland. Although Steve’s parents went their separate ways, they were dedicated parents and loved Steve very much.

As a boy, Steve took many trips to the Midwest to visit his extended family. Whether he was jumping in the chilly lakes of Minnesota, spending the summer with his grandparents in South Dakota, or getting into mischief with his cousins in Wisconsin; Steve was always happy to be with his family and proud of his Midwestern roots.

In high school, Steve was a competitive athlete and excelled in football. He played both offense and defense and made many lifelong friends on the field. Steve graduated from Centennial High School in 1983. He was voted the Leader in School Spirit and Student Body President. Everyone loved Steve and wanted to be his friend.

Next Steve attended Brigham Young University before moving back to Portland to begin working full time. Steve was an incredibly hard worker. You could always count on him to get the job done and to do it right. Over the years he worked at Montgomery Ward, Grand Tree Furniture and the Home Depot.

The best job Steve ever had was as a DJ at a local lounge. “Rockin’ Robes” was the life of the party! Steve had a knack for connecting with the patrons and entertaining them all night long. Steve had such an expansive knowledge of music which served him well on the job. Whether he was attending a concert with friends or simply listening to records at home, music could always put a smile on his face.

Steve had many interests, but the most important things in Steve’s life were his family and friends. Steve was such a kind and compassionate man. He was generous to a fault and always put others before himself. Steve had a great sense of humor and was a joy to be around.

Steve now lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. He is survived by his aunts, Sharon (Jerry) Friend, Judy (Bruce) Kobs and Wendy Schultz; his extended family, dear friends, wonderful neighbors and coworkers. Steve was greeted in Heaven by his mother, Janet Robards; father, Richard Robards; and his grandparents.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Steve at Home Depot. I will never forget his booming voice “JD is in the house!” whnever I arrived at work. No matter the stresses I knew I’d face in the day, that greeting always made me feel like I was going to make it through anything. He will be sorely missed.

I have known Steve since the 6th grade. He has always been so friendly to everyone and very funny. I have many memories of him all thru school. He was very well liked and a friend to many.
The last time I saw him was 2 years ago at a local restaurant. We caught up on what had been going on in our lives. He gave me a hug and said Merry Christmas. We were there celebrating my nephews birthday. After we were done we went up to pay. The waitress said that Steve had paid the whole bill and said Merry Christmas again. That is just the kind of person he was. He will be missed a lot. Rest in peace Steve. Until we meet again.
Condolences to his whole family.

Condolence from Jen Brallier on December 10th, 2020 1:35 am

Steve was one of the first people I met at HD… He was caring and had kind of a goofy-fun personality, and I really appreciated that!
I remember times when we would both be working outside garden. Conversations were sweet and fun. He loved to talk about his football days! He had a tender love for his family and friends; a Kind and Pure heart. If I was feeling kinda blue, he was always so empathetic and wanted me to feel better. He was one of the most loving, unselfish people I’ve ever met. I’m a better person for having known him and he will be always in my heart. Love you, Steve!

Condolence from Denton Edwards on December 10th, 2020 10:25 pm

I was privileged to know Steve for many years and work with him for two years at the Troutdale Home Depot. He was one of the nicest, kindest people I have ever met, and everyone who met him or knew him was touched by his genuine and uplifting spirit. He served as a coach and mentor to his work family and impacted the lives of every person who knew him. Steve will be genuinely missed and will live in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

Condolence from Kathy Foote on December 11th, 2020 3:43 pm

I had the honor of working with Steve for the past five years at Home Depot, however I had begun a friendship long before that as a customer. I treasure the moments in time that we shared, the laughter that floated through the air and the wisdom he bestowed upon me. Memories made will forever be held close to my heart. In life we meet many people each and every day. Many people that we encounter along the pathway are GOOD, but then there are those we encounter that are GREAT and without question Steve was GREAT! We all can only hope to leave such a lasting impression on others the way Steve did with those he met. The world lost an amazing man, but the universe gained a beautiful star! My sympathy goes out to his family and to all of those who were blessed enough to call him friend

Condolence from Mitzi Hathaway on December 12th, 2020 11:56 am

Steohen was the holder of so many of my memories in HS and the 30+ years that followed. He loved to see his friends happy and enjoying life. A confidant, entertainer, brother and friend to many. His smile and hugs were known to heal hearts and brighten bad days for many including me. To say he will be missed is an understatement, for there will never be anyone like him to cross our paths again. However a spirit that bright will continue to live on, within all of us. He was truly one of the good guys and one of my most memorable influences in life.

Steve was a genuine nice guy. Only knew him as I delivered pizza to him when he ordered from Papa’s Pizza Parlor when I worked there before we closed a few years ago. He always seemed so happy when I did have the chance to deliver to him on those late nights and very generous.

Condolence from Debbie Geary on December 17th, 2020 10:15 pm

I was so shocked when I read the news about Steve. I worked at GranTree for 15 years..Steve always smiled and always found the good even in a bad situation. Many could have learned from his ability to take things for what they were and move on. So young but the Lord must have needed him for something Special. To his family I pray you get through this loss and remember you will see him again.
God Bless you.

Condolence from Natalka Kuchabsky on April 21st, 2021 10:15 pm

Steve was truly loved by my entire family. We grew up in the same neighborhood where my oldest bro played sports with Steve and my sister Tammy and steve were H.S. dance dates. As the youngest in my family I grew up always listening to my siblings speak about Steve with such love and admiration. We are all truly sorry he left us all so early but so blessed to have known him. Thanks for the memories. RIP

Condolence from RUTH – (BEDLION) STEWART on May 28th, 2021 4:34 pm

Although, I did not know Steve as a friend, I was in the class of 83′ at Centennial and always appreciated his fun spirit and pride to be an Eagle. My most favorite memory of Steve is when he and Tony Newman did a BLUES BROTHERS skit during lunch. It was awesome.
