Mary was my late wife, Sharon’s, Minnesota “mother.” Ron was a dear friend and co-worker. We spent so much time at the house in Welch over the years, and commuted to Miller Meester daily for about five years. Ron was more than a commuter and co-worker. He was a mentor. Most of all, he was a friend. And a damned good one. I’m so sorry we miscommunicated last weekend. We made tentative plans to meet up this coming Monday at Rhonda’s. My condolences to all of you.

Condolence from Jim Ruen on March 24th, 2017 12:52 pm

Ron was a good and kind person and I valued his friendship and mentoring a great deal. As an intern with Irrigaiton Age, I learned much more from him about agricultural journalism than any classes I had taken in college. In later years I had the privilege of working alongside him at Miller Meester. There as well, he was as much a mentor as a friend and he is missed.

Condolence from Frank Lessiter on March 24th, 2017 1:17 pm

Ron was an exceptional writer and wrote for a number of years for us about outstanding no-tillers for our No-Till Farmer magazine. He will be missed.

Condolence from John Colwell on March 24th, 2017 6:43 pm

Ron and I shared the honor of being employees of Miller Meester Adv. for 16 years. We spent many miles on the road and in and out of airports for farming stories and photography. I had just had lunch with Ron a couple of months ago and we had planned to do so more often. I have many found memories of our travels together. He will be missed.

Condolence from Kathryn Roman on March 24th, 2017 9:19 pm

To the Ross family-
I had the distinct pleasure of knowing Ron while living at Brentwood Court. He was a great conversationalist and the best of story tellers. I often sought his advice on my mini balcony garden which saved several of them. He was an all around very nice man and will be missed a lot. I am a richer person fo knowing him. Prayers and blessings to you all.

Condolence from Tony Audiss on March 25th, 2017 1:58 am

Sending prayers and strength to the family from Tucson. I was fortunate enough to be able to meet Ron and see his joy he had from taking his beautiful photos. I remember recently when he came to Arizona and then traveled the west coast and took so many pictures. He will live on through the wonderful memories he gave us all.

Condolence from Harry Cline, Fresno, CA on March 25th, 2017 12:33 pm

It was 1976 when I met Ron. I had left newspaper reporting to go into ag publishing with a small company in CA. I met Ron through AAEA. I wanted to learn more about how ag publishing worked, and he invited me to visit Webb. He managed to get just about every Webb editor into the company kitchen to visit with me and answer questions. He laughed afterward that he learned as much as I did because seldom did all the Webb ag editors gather in one spot to share. I knew then Ron has offered me rare insight into the business. We remained friends through the years and shared a common concern for troubled children. During the ag publishing heyday, it was the general belief that you had to be a raised on a farm or dairy to be an ag journalist. Ron and I shared a different view. He believed that you don’t need to know how to drive a combine or milk a cow to be an ag journalist; a good journalist can write about anything. Ron was not only well respected as a talented and kind journalist, but he was a friend to everyone. So long my friend.

Condolence from Charles Henry on March 25th, 2017 12:34 pm

Rhonda and Family:
My wife, Nancy, and I are unknown to you, but we wish to send you our condolences on Ron’s passing. I was a writer for The Dakota Farmer and competed with Ron who was with The Farmer at the time. It was a lively professional competition. Later Ron played a very significant role in my work life. As a beginning freelance writer in Boise, Idaho, Ron offered me a contract for three articles a month for Irrigation Age. That regular income gave me the basis for my new business and the confidence that I could make it on my own. I will always be grateful to him for his friendship, mentoring, and his trust in my writing.
Sincerly,
Charlie Henry

Condolence from Sandra Frie-Smith on March 25th, 2017 2:32 pm

To Ron’s family:

What a special occasion it was for Ron and I to share some good quality cousin time a few years ago. I was able to contact another cousin, whom neither of us had ever met, Cristy Manska Egan, and she and her husband drove over from the San Fransisco Bay area for an evening of family genealogy and bonding. Her grandpa, Bert Ross, was our uncle.
When I would visit the Brookings area, Ron would make every effort to join us for a family reunion. He certainly did enjoy his family fellowship, spoke fondly of his children and grandchildren, his adventures “on the road”, and many (comical) family memories.
I extend my sincere condolences to all of you. He was a great guy, creative, intelligent, and FUN! I will miss his Scottish Ross humor.
Later, Ronnie……………….

Condolence from Tony Minnichsoffer on April 17th, 2017 12:33 pm

Dear Rhonda & Tom, Diana & Dean, Juliet & Scott, and Steven,
Please accept my deepest most sincere sympathy at the loss of your Dad. You folks and all your dear ones are in my prayers.
For me, Ron Ross was an incredible role model. He was kind, strong and professional. We first met shortly after he joined Webb in 1966. Ron worked in the Ag Services Division then and as a restless senior in ag journalism, I yearned to know how to launch my career. Although Ron was only six years older than me he seemed to have 20 years experience at everything I wanted to do. I knew immediately he could teach me much.
Life’s grand. Only two years later we were both associate editors for The Farmer magazine. And for the next four years Ron was my mentor, buddy, sounding board and beloved colleague. Ron’s shared wisdom, family values and moral principles were one of God’s great gifts to me.
We each moved on, and then, as fate twists, we again worked together at Miller Meester. And our aging seemed to enrich our friendship.
Although you’re saddened by your loss now, I hope you can find some joy in knowing that Ron is with Mary and Danny in a better place.
With loving sympathy,
Tony Minnichsoffer

Condolence from Rudy Schnasse on April 18th, 2017 3:35 pm

Ron was a good friend and colleague dating back almost to the time when he started to work at Webb, and Mary and the children waved at him from their VW bus as he crossed the parking lot to enter our offices. He was an inspiration to his fellow agricultural writers and editors, with sound knowledge of his subject and a conscientious craftsman and wordsmith. At Miller Meester, too, he was appreciated for the same reasons. I fondly remember lunch hour walks along the Mississippi and our joy when we saw “our” dandelion in the massive wall, having survived another winter and high water, welcoming the spring. I will miss Ron.
Our condolences to the entire family.

Condolence from Rudy Schnasse on April 19th, 2017 10:30 am

It is a privilege to have known Ron as colleague and friend since we began work at Webb. He was known and valued as a fine agricultural journalist, wordsmith and craftsman with deep knowledge of his field. These qualities continued to inspire his coworkers at Miller Meester. As I contemplate Ron’s departure from this life, I remember our noontime walks along the Mississippi River after those long winters. We’d lean over the railing and there, in the massive wall, “our” dandelion had survived cold and high water of yet another winter to welcome a new spring. I will miss Ron.
Our condolences to Ron’s entire family.
Rudy and Susan Schnasse
