Richard “Rick” Mickelson, 71, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family.
Rick was born on August 23, 1954, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Harold and Corrine Mickelson. He was raised in Albert Lea alongside his older brother, Vance, and graduated from Albert Lea High School. From a young age, Rick had a passion for automobiles and a true need for speed. That passion led him to work at Thom Automotive before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Rick attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and was stationed overseas in Germany. After completing his military service, he returned home and continued his career at Thom Automotive.
Life eventually led Rick to Champlin, Minnesota, where he met one of his closest lifelong friends, Rod. Together, the two ventured to Iowa, where Rick met the love of his life, Kathi Goldsworth. They were married in 1985 and later welcomed their only son, Justin. The family later made their home in Colorado, where they built countless cherished memories together. Whether they were snowmobiling, attending drag races and car shows, watching Rick compete in four-wheeler ice racing, or serving as a crew chief for Thumper, Rick’s enthusiasm for motorsports and the outdoors brought their family together.
Rick was happiest when he was outside, behind the grill, or lending a helping hand. He loved grilling and catering for family and friends, camping, golfing, cheering on the Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Vikings, and never missed the opportunity to enjoy Sunday evening dinner with his family. No matter where he lived, Rick became the neighbor everyone could count on. He was known for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to help anyone in need. His caring spirit, hardworking nature, and unwavering devotion to those he loved will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Kathi Mickelson; his son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Abby Mickelson; his cherished granddaughter, Maddison, who brought him endless pride and joy; his brother, Vance Mickelson; his sister-in-law, Linda Mickelson; his nephew, Chad Mickelson; his niece, Nikki (Jared) Hanson; and his great-niece, Cassidy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Corrine Mickelson.
Rick’s greatest legacy was not the cars he loved or the races he attended, but the love he gave so freely to his family, friends, neighbors, and community. His strength, generous heart, and unforgettable spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held on *Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Meeting Point 14537 Dodd Blvd., Rosemount, MN 55068.* Family and friends are warmly invited to join in celebrating Rick’s life, sharing stories, laughter, and memories—just as Rick would have enjoyed.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to honor Rick’s memory by helping a neighbor, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying the outdoors, just as he always did.
