Raymond John "Bud" Huhner

Raymond John “Bud” Huhner, formerly of Davenport, ND, passed away on January 22, 2026 at the age of 97. He had been in hospice care at McKenna Crossing in Prior Lake, MN for the previous eight months.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM with Visitation from 10 – 10:45 AM on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 14085 Pike Lake Trail NE, Prior Lake, MN. He will be laid to rest at a later date in Fargo, North Dakota.

Bud was born July 6, 1928 to Reinhold and Edith (Carstensen) Huhner on the Huhner family homestead near Davenport, the sixth of seven children. He attended first grade at a one-room schoolhouse at Warren, ND, and grades 2 through 12 in Davenport, graduating with the class of 1946. Following school he started to farm with his father. He also served in the Army for two years stationed at Camp Rucker, AL from January 1951 through December 1952.

On July 4, 1953, he met Elaine Heller at a dance at Johnson’s Roller Rink in Moorhead, MN. They were married on May 22, 1954 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo and lived on the family farm where they raised their three children. Bud took over ownership of the farm in 1958.

The family was charter members of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in West Fargo. Bud held numerous church offices, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. He also served on the Warren township board and the Kindred Farmers Elevator Board. The family enjoyed summers at a beautiful log cabin that Bud and Elaine designed on Lake Eunice in Becker County, MN.

He retired from farming in 1982. He worked as a crop insurance adjuster for Overholt Insurance Company, eventually obtaining a property insurance license and opening his own agency. He retired in 2003.

Bud and Elaine moved to the Twin Cities in 1996 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Bud’s interests in retirement included reading, crossword puzzles, talking farming and politics, and getting the occasional Letter to the Editor published in The Forum (e.g. warning us of the “insanity” of resetting our clocks twice a year). He was also at the cutting edge of technology, particularly when it came to hybrid and electric vehicles.

Survived by loving wife of 71 years, Elaine; son, Russell Huhner and daughter, Barbara Perry; grandchildren, Sarah Balogh, Benjamin Huhner, Matthew Huhner, Jack Perry, Ella Perry, Karissa Huhner, Anna Huhner and William Huhner; five great-grandchildren; and other family and friends. Preceded in death by his parents; son, Kris; and siblings, Eleanor Johnson, Frances Richardson, Marion Tuskind, Carol Salberg, Luella Stenberg and Merle Huhner.
