Nancy (Oestrich) Scheldberg

Nancy Scheldberg, 80, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026, leaving behind a life measured less in accomplishments than in the quiet ways she made people feel cared for.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2:00 - 2:50 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation (104 First Street West, Jordan).

She was born July 16, 1946, in Wisconsin, the oldest child of Walter and Dorothy Oestreich. Growing up in Wisconsin, she was a bright and dedicated student who graduated as valedictorian of her class. She had plans to attend nursing school, but health challenges prevented her from pursuing that dream. The wish to care for others never left her. It simply found another home: her family, her kitchen, her garden, and anyone who needed a kind word.

When her children were small, she stayed home. After they reached middle school she returned to work, but home remained the center. She treasured being a wife, mother and a grandmother. The hours that mattered most were the ordinary ones: a book in her lap, a good television program, something chocolate in the oven, cards dealt for UNO.

Nancy’s hands were rarely idle. She cross-stitched, worked in ceramics, made jewelry and rock art, designed cards for every holiday, and in later years colored picture art on her tablet. She kept a garden as long as she could and canned what she grew. At Christmas she made numerous cookies including molasses cutouts with homemade frosting and plenty of sprinkles, and lefse. She read constantly. She baked often. Dogs had a claim on her, especially Sparky.

In her retirement-home years she stayed social. She joined activities and still loved a game of cards. Friends and family remember a sweet, kind woman with a warm smile and a gift for making a room feel welcoming.

Nancy is survived by her husband, John Edward Scheldberg; children Heidi (Oscar Sanchez) Scheldberg, Scott (Lynzie) Scheldberg, and John (Katy) Scheldberg; grandchildren Macy and Ellie, Kaylee and Jacob; step-grandchildren Cathren, Evelyn, and Madison; and siblings Pat (Roger) Olson, Roger Oestreich (Cathy), Kay (Dean) Dobbe, and Mark (Mary) Oestreich. She was preceded in death by her parents and by nephews Walter Oestreich and Eric Olson.

Though she is deeply missed, her kindness, creativity, smile, and love for her family will live on in the many people whose lives she touched.
