Marilyn was born in St. Paul on June 24, 1931, to Thomas and Claire LaVelle. Marilyn was the middle child with two older brothers, and a younger sister and brother. Her family moved to Lakeville when she was five. She was a graduate of Lakeville High School. After high school, she continued her education and began her career as a medical technician. She met the love of her life, Paul, at a dance hall near Spring Lake. Captivated by his sparkly, twinkling blue eyes, the two began a long-distance romance while he was serving our country in the United States Army. Their relationship blossomed into a marriage lasting nearly 67 years. Together they built a beautiful life in Jordan and raised five children. Although Marilyn started her career in the medical field, her greatest accomplishment was being a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Faith was the cornerstone of Marilyn’s life. She prayed the Rosary daily and her and Paul were active members at St. John’s Church in Jordan for nearly 70 years and participated in weekly adoration hour on Tuesday afternoons for many years. Marilyn served on the funeral lunch committee, loved doing the coleslaw for the church festival and they also served Meals on Wheels.
Marilyn loved to play cards, and her and Paul had a special couples’ poker group that they shared many years of laughter and fun with. Marilyn was also involved in a women’s penny poker club that she was a member of for many years. She loved playing Euchre as well, especially treasuring this time with her grandchildren. Marilyn also loved her “Friday hair appointment” and made sure her hair was always as beautiful as her smile.
Paul and Marilyn enjoyed their travels to Germany, visiting relatives, Hawaii, as well as many trips to San Antonio, Texas, Arizona, Florida and of course trips with the card gang to Las Vegas, San Francisco and Branson. They also enjoyed traveling to Army reunions across the United States with their Army friends.
Marilyn loved to cook and bake, especially chicken wings, coffee cake, chocolate chip cookies and banana bread. You never went to her house or later at All Saints without making sure she had a glass of ginger ale within arm’s reach. Mom loved watching sports and attending kids and grandchildren’s other extra-curricular school activities. She loved talking stats and sports news, especially with her grandsons. She faithfully read the daily newspaper from cover to cover and had a special love for politics.
Marilyn resided in Jordan until 2021 when she moved to All Saints Senior Living in Shakopee. Here she created many meaningful relationships with residents who became great friends. This is where her card-playing days ended, but her bingo-playing days began. She never missed Monday, Wednesday and Saturday bingo days at All Saints. At All Saints she treasured the monthly mass in the chapel with clergy from St. Joachim and Anne Church in Shakopee. She watched at least two but often three Sunday televised masses.
Special thanks for the care and compassion from All Saints Senior Living staff and Grace Hospice staff, as well as other family and relatives who helped us along this journey.
Marilyn lived her life devoted to faith, her Irish heritage, and her family. She will be remembered and missed by her children, Michael P. (Cynthia), Bruce (Cheryl), Connie (Kevin) Welch, Mark (Jody Fischer), Lori (Ron) Lambrecht; grandchildren, Brian (Tory), Benjamin (Emily), Nathan (Allie), Justin, Paula (Robert) Terdal Moe, Erin (Chris) Gomez, Ryan (Emily), Kevin, Jamie (David) Bloom, Samantha (Justin) Hanson, Max (Erika); great grandchildren, Zach, Alex, Illona, Lukas, Malin, Linnea, Owen, Elise, Oliver, Raegan and Kendall; siblings, Myrna Wermerskirchen, Gregory (Dianne) LaVelle; sister-in-law Montse LaVelle; loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Marilyn is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Paul, parents, Thomas & Claire LaVelle; siblings, Thomas LaVelle and Dean (Monica) LaVelle.
