Fredrick Howard Horton II

Fredrick Howard Horton II, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on May 19th, 2025. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in the heart of Kentucky bourbon country, Bardstown, Rick’s life was a testament to his unwavering work ethic, deep love of family and friends, and commitment to service of his country and those in need.

His early years were marked by spending summers in Alabama with one of his favorite people, his grandmother, Old Nannie, and later as he grew up in Kentucky, he enjoyed playing football, racing cars, and hanging out with his friends, including his time in the Mystiques band. He sharpened his interest and skills in engineering during his service in the United States Air Force, earning numerous certifications and honors.

His contributions to the Titan Missile program at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California were significant chapters in his remarkable career, which later led him to NASA. His work on Apollo missions, a piece of American history itself, bestowed upon him invaluable keepsakes and stories that he cherished and shared with his family and friends throughout his life. Following his time with NASA, his expertise propelled him to roles with Israel defense and medical device companies.

Rick's dedication extended beyond his professional life. He loved volunteering and did so for numerous organizations, including the Catholic Appalachian Project, where he improved the lives of underserved communities, and the Kentucky Air Museum and Old Friends Equine Retirement, demonstrating his compassion for both people and animals. His dedication earned him several awards for his volunteer services.

On September 10, 1966, Rick married the love of his life, Karen Ann Frost. Their 27-year union blessed them with four children: Christine, Fredrick III, Michael, and Mary. As a family, they created many memories, from vacations and sporting events to the unique experience of living in Hawaii before settling in Minnesota. His family grew, and he is survived by his ten grandchildren: Morgan Atzmiller (Charlie), Gabi Reynolds (Scott Friedrich), Katrina Reynolds, Callan Horton, Calder Horton, Madeline Horton, Genevieve Horton, Mitchell Stanchina (Grace Ackerman), Cole Stanchina, and Ava Stanchina; and three great-grandchildren: Henry Atzmiller, and two expected babies, baby girl Atzmiller and baby girl Friedrich. He was a presence in their lives, attending their events and cherishing the moments spent with them.

Rick’s passions were as vibrant as his spirit. He was a lifelong Kentucky Derby enthusiast, a connoisseur of bourbon (a given, considering his Bardstown upbringing!), and a dedicated ambassador for Maker’s Mark, proudly bearing his own personal barrel, number, 691856. Giving tours at Maker’s Mark became one of his most cherished jobs. He also found joy in fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends. His love for Kentucky, music, and volunteering were integral parts of his life.

Rick is also survived by his children: Christine Reynolds (Brandon), Fredrick (“Ricky”) Horton III, Michael Horton (Kim), and Mary Stanchina (Sean). He is preceded in death by his mother, Tommie Lee Dreyspring; father, Fredrick Howard Horton I; and sister, Janis Horton.

A life well-lived, Rick’s legacy will continue, and we will celebrate and honor his life on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation in Prior Lake, Minnesota.
