Douglas Scheurenbrand, age 90, of Prior Lake, MN / Gettysburg, SD, passed away peacefully on Oct 18, 2025, at his condo in Prior Lake, MN.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, from 3-6 pm, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation, 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake. A Christian Funeral will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 11 am, with an additional visitation from 10-10:45 am, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 20165 Heath Ave, Lakeville, MN. Pastor Kim Kyllo will preside. Doug will be laid to rest next to his wife, Laurel, at St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery.
Born on March 17, 1935, in Watertown, SD, Doug was raised in Mitchell, SD. Doug returned to his SD roots by becoming a resident of the West Whitlock Recreational Area on the Missouri River. For anyone who knew Doug’s primary interests and sense of humor, it was very appropriate that he resided where the mantra was “a small drinking village with a fishing problem.” During the fishing off-season, Doug spent time at his Prior Lake condo—where he was near his family, home church, longtime Lakeville/Prior Lake area friends, and the Prior Lake American Legion and VFW. Lastly, Doug escaped the winter cold and dark and had a place in Carefree/Cave Creek, AZ, where he stayed.
Doug graduated from Mitchell High School in 1951, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. After high school, he was a fire jumper for the National Forest Service and joined the Army in 1957, where he served with the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper/medic. During his service with the Airborne, he was deployed to Alaska for winter survival training and to Panama for jungle survival training. He was discharged in 1959 and remained in the Army Reserve through 1963.
After his military service, Doug initially attended college with a plan to become a pharmacist but shifted gears to become a husband to his first wife (Kay) and father of two boys (Fritz and Peter), as well as becoming a Manufacturer Sales Representative. It was through that line of work that he met and later married Laurel Lynn. Quinn (Laurel’s son from her first marriage) and Doug actually met for the first time at Doug and Laurel’s January 1978 wedding in San Diego. Doug’s last occupation was as a mechanic/welder for Lull Manufacturing in Lakeville, MN. Doug really loved the freedom of retirement!
Doug’s acreage in Lakeville provided the space to have Arabian horses, raise calves, and plant and harvest a huge garden. He was part of a Thoroughbred racehorse partnership and a member of both the Elks and American Legion. Doug had many hobbies and life experiences (far too many to list and probably many left untold); however, he will always be known for the following: loved fishing, hunting, playing cards, eating cake/pie/cinnamon rolls, Vikings football, Twins baseball, having a bulldog by his side, and the “game” of wheeling and dealing to buy and/or sell things. His hard-edged exterior was softened by only three people: Laurel Lynn, McKenna, and Alanna. Marring Laurel made him a better man, and becoming “G-Pa” to those girls changed his rule with a stern fist approach into being wrapped around their pinkies. He found numerous ways to spoil them but also reminded them at every possible event that he was the best-looking grandpa in the room. Forever humble!
It is very appropriate that Doug be remembered as an experienced and animated storyteller, for his sharing his painfully direct and candid opinions, his devotion to his Christian faith, his love of life, food, friends, and family, and lastly a good joke. Doug typically closed his conversations with “we’ll keep in touch” ... .and now we transition to keeping his memory alive. All who knew Doug are welcome to attend and celebrate his life at the times/locations listed above.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Health Partners Park Nicollet Foundation - Hospice Home Care Fund, Shriners Children’s, St. Joseph’s Indian School, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
