David Joshua Lassahn

David Joshua Lassahn, age 26, of Farmington, MN, was born in Northfield, MN on February 25, 2000 to Thaine and Shelly Lassahn. David grew up attending Farmington Public Schools and graduated with the class of 2018. He also grew up attending Eden Baptist Church, where so many dear friends taught him the love of Jesus, by both word and example.

David’s lifelong passion was cars - or really anything with an engine - preferably diesel, and preferably a manual transmission - of course. From the way he enthusiastically pronounced his first word - not just ”car,” but “ca-ah-ai” - to the way he could accurately identify different types of heavy equipment at age three, David was usually thinking about, talking about, or tinkering with some type of vehicle. Or, much to his mother’s dismay, he was buying yet another one to add to his ever-growing backyard collection.

David was very intelligent, but not a fan of the school system, and therefore, wasn’t the best of students. As one of his diesel-tech instructors once said, “The kid knows his stuff. He’s like a walking diesel textbook. But he’s failing because he won’t show up for class.” David’s perspective was that a walking diesel textbook shouldn’t need to show up for class. The rebel in David wasn’t willing to conform to the system, so he didn’t continue his education. That left him struggling through his young adult life to find his purpose and occupation. He held various jobs, but nothing really gave him the job satisfaction he was seeking - until this last February when he was hired as a technician at Dodge of Burnsville. It seemed that he had finally found a role that fit his interests, skills, and genuine love for automobiles. And it didn’t hurt that they served a catered lunch to employees every Saturday, because if David’s first love was cars, his second love was food!

David had many close friends, with whom he spent the majority of his free time. They were usually doing something engine-related together. And they likely got themselves into a fair amount of trouble, none of which mom and dad ever heard about. David kept his secrets well.

David’s life came to an unexpected end on Sunday, September 13, 2026, while kayaking on Ashley Lake in Kalispell, Montana, where he was vacationing with his family. He had been so enthusiastic about his first trip to see the Montana mountain scenery. His last photo on his phone was of the starlit nighttime Montana sky. David was frequently admiring the sky, snapping pictures of sunsets, full moons, stars, and northern lights. His childhood prayers always included the phrase, “And thank you for the sun and the moon and the stars.”

David is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Barbara Cook. He is survived by his parents, his four younger siblings, Calvin, Alex, Jenna, and Logan, his maternal grandfather, Alan Cook, his paternal grandparents, Paul and Loretta Lassahn, and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. 

A Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00pm Friday, September 25 at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 4565 Pleasant St. SE, Prior Lake. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00am Saturday, September 26 at Eden Baptist Church, 1313 Hwy 13, Burnsville with a visitation beginning at 10am. David will be laid to rest with a private burial at Emmanuel Cemetery, near his home in Farmington.
