Myles F. Mares

A life-long, dedicated and committed resident of Credit River Township, Myles F. Mares, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday June 18th, 2014 at the age of 94, at Mala Strana Health Care Center, in New Prague, MN. Family will greet guests and love to hear stories of Myles, on Sunday, June 22 from 4-7 pm and one hour prior to the Mass of Christian Burial, on Monday, June 23 at 11 am, ALL at the Church of St. Michael, 16311 Duluth Avenue SE, Prior Lake, MN. Father Tom Sieg will be presiding. Myles will be laid to rest next to his wife, Dorothy at Credit River Cemetery, with full military honors provided, by the Prior Lake V.F.W. Honor Guard.

On December 4, 1919, in Belle Plaine Township, Frank and Emma (Hertaus) Mares, welcomed the first of seven children into their family, Myles Francis. Growing up during the depression, meant difficult times, but Myles and his family made their own fun, with lots of laughter, great memories with family, plenty of food and an occasional beer. As a young child, the family moved to a farm in Credit River. Farming was hard work, but Myles made the best of his free time. As a teenager, he loved to tinker with cars and built them piece-by-piece using parts he found.

Finishing eighth grade, Myles attended trade school in Chicago, before enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served his country during World War II, until it ended. Returning from the war, Myles’ sister, Edith introduced him to a beautiful young woman, named Dorothy Broshofke. It was love at first sight. On June 25, 1949, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in St. Paul, MN, they declared their love for each other. Myles and Dorothy, bought the adjacent farm to his father’s farm, where they raised four children, Patty, Larry, Rita and Kenny. He enjoyed the farm life; it’s livelihood and the successes along the way.

A faithful servant of Credit River, Myles served for over 33 years on the town board. He loved the local politics. A skillful jack-of-all-trades, Myles could fix anything, especially with bailing twine and duck tape. He especially relished helping out his neighbors. A love for playing cards, he also enjoyed dancing and socializing with his friends, at the local watering hole…the V.F.W. In later years, Myles enjoyed fishing with his buddies, at the Lake of the Woods and for salmon on the Great Lakes. Over the years, they have all had some impressive catches.

Myles was a pillar in the community; he loved his Credit River family, the American flag and was the last of the charter members of the Prior Lake V.F.W. Club. Myles always sported a smile on his face and had this gentle, kind and loving personality.

Left to honor Myles’ life is his beloved children, Patty Simberg of Prior Lake, Larry Mares of Burnsville, Rita (Jack) Molumby of Savage, Kenny Mares of Lakeville; grandchildren, Blair Molumby, Tracy (Jason) Self; brother, Clem Mares of Prior Lake; sisters, Mary Jo Austin of Lakeville, Angeline (Tom) Stone of Shoreview, Nancy Lisherness of Scottsdale, AZ; other loving relatives and devoted friends.

Myles was welcomed home into heaven by his wife, Dorothy; parents; brother Ewald Mares and sister, Edith Kippley.

Pallbearers for Myles will be LeRoy Schommer, Ole Johnson, John Hertaus, Norm Pullar, Marty Novotny and Mark Austin

Myles is deeply missed at Mala by all! I was the nurse with you the morning he was called to Heaven and after you left, I was honored to follow the most professional Funeral staff/ Mortician to the Hearse on that morning. Myles was escorted with the American flag properly draped to a “tee” and rode off in the sunshine….how fitting for one of the TRUE PATRIOTS of this country. It was such an honor to know him, meet his family and most of all, be inspired by his genuine goodness.
His smile is permeated in our minds and his kindness remembered; his heart was so golden and true.
Bless all who knew him and thank you for filling his life with never ending love & happiness; it was, and is, contagious.
I stood with my hand over my heart in salute to a rare American treasure as the hearse carried him down the road. What an honor to know such a solid man.
Sincerely ,
Cristeen S
