Lillian Irene Stjernstrom

December 15, 1923 – January 29, 2020

Lillian Irene (Enerson) Stjernstrom passed away peacefully on January 29, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital, Shakopee, Minnesota at the age of 96 years with her family at her side.

Lillian was born on December 15, 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Ener and Hilda (Johnson) Enerson. She graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul in 1942. In 1943 she traveled to Washington D.C. to join the Army Signal Corps to assist in cracking the Japanese code. Lillian married Richard Stjernstrom on May 24, 1949 and the couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

Lillian worked for Mankato School District 77 including many years in the Mankato High (West) business office and Roosevelt Elementary as assistant to the principal.

Upon retirement, Lillian and Richard enjoyed visiting their three children, family and friends at their Largo, Florida and Cedar Lake, Wisconsin homes. Lillian enjoyed doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards, games, puzzles and going to the area casinos. Lillian discovered a talent for oil painting in her 70’s and produced many fine pieces of artwork.

In 2015, Lillian and Richard moved to All Saints Senior Living in Shakopee, Minnesota where they have many friends.

Left to honor her memory is her husband, Richard Stjernstrom; daughters Gail (Roger) Norland and Jean (Tom Moriarty) Stjernstrom and son Bruce (Kathy) Stjernstrom; grandchildren Rachael (Kurt) Flaten, Robert (Katherine) Norland, Melanie (Matt Anderson) Moriarty and Mark (Rachel Ward-Moriarty) Moriarty; and great-grandchildren Erick Flaten, Sam Flaten, Timothy Norland, Elijah Norland, Everett Anderson and Arlo Anderson.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents and brother Chester Enerson.

A memorial service honoring Lillian took place on February 1, 2020 at the All Saints Senior Living chapel with family and friends in attendance. A day of remembrance is planned on May 24, 2020 at the family cabin, Cedar Lake, Wisconsin. The family will forward monetary memorials to the American Heart Association.

Condolences for the family of “Lillian Irene Stjernstrom”

Condolence from Tom Moriarty on January 31st, 2020 1:47 pm

I was fortunate to call Lillian my mother-in-law. Too many memories to relate, but most of them were kind, considerate, and with a smile. She loved card games, puzzles, holidays at the lake with relatives, friends and family. She and Dick spent many days and nights and years at the lake, raising Gail, Bruce and Jean. She loved shopping-I think Dick was glad Amazon came later in life! And certainly the hours spent at the casino, winning!
She was generous to the grandkids with time and stories. I am glad Mark and Melanie had 30+ years with her.
One of my first memories was a holiday meal-all done eating-she realized she forgot the jello! I don’t think I let her forget-and she would laugh. I will miss her kindness and smile.

What a lovely tribute to your Mother in law, Tom! Our sincere sympathies to the entire family. Kevin and Cheri

Condolence from Martha Anderson on February 10th, 2020 4:22 pm

I was blessed to have spent time with Lillian and Dick over the past year – visiting with them at All Saints as a care guide with Allina’s Community Palliative Care program. She would greet me wearing one of her many colorful scarves and we would talk about getting older and living well. She shared the experience she had as part of the Signal Code team – what a contribution! I enjoyed her artwork and seeing family photos. A pleasure for me to spend time with Lillian and with Dick.
Deep peace, Martha

Condolence from Kathy Reed Day on February 11th, 2020 11:24 am

I have many fond memories of growing up across the street from the Stjernstrom family! Our parents had lots of parties together, or mom would go over for a cup of coffee to visit with Lil. Lil was so kind! I don’t think I ever heard her raise her voice. My deepest condolences to Gail, Bruce, and Jean, and extended family.
