Lee

Lee Howard Urness, age 71, of Prior Lake, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 19, 2017.

A time of gathering will be held on Wednesday, May 24, from 4-7 pm, with a time of sharing at 7 pm, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake and one hour prior to the Celebration of Life Service on Thursday, May 25 at 1 pm, at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church 3611 North Berens Road NW, Prior Lake. Pastor Dan Poffenberger will preside. Lee’s pall bearers will be Tim Shanley, Bob Bushman, John Fossum, James Urness, Charlie Urness, Eric Urness and honorary bearers of Evan Sitzmann and Alec Sitzmann

Lee was born on January 9, 1946, to Howard and Maxine (Lee) Urness in Alexandria, MN. He was the oldest of three children. Lee grew up in Alexandria in a house that was connected to the Douglas County Jail as his father was the Douglas County Sheriff. Lee attended college at Hamline University on an academic scholarship where he played basketball and obtained a degree in Biology. After college, Lee moved back to Alexandria and worked as a Deputy Sheriff. In 1972, he began working at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) as an undercover narcotics agent and was later promoted as a Team Leader in 1977. In the course of his career with the BCA, Lee also worked as a special agent with the FBI Fugitive Task Force and was a member of the Minnesota Emergency Response Team (SWAT). His work with the BCA took him all over Minnesota and even beyond.

While working as an undercover narcotics agent in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Lee met the love of his life, Kathy Taylor. He married Kathy on February 25, 1978. Lee and Kathy had three children, Lisa, Matt and Kari. He was involved in all of his kids’ sports when they were younger and really enjoyed coaching them.

Lee lost Kathy in 2008, but he always worked hard at keeping her memory alive. Lee created a pond in memory of her and worked hard every year at making sure it was just right. He loved spending time at the family cabin, hunting, fishing, planting flowers, drinking wine and just simply enjoying life. Lee had an impact on each person he met. Lee’s smile lit up the room and he found joy in making others happy.

Lee will be deeply missed by his children, Tom (Dawn) Walker, Lisa (Josh) Sitzmann, Matt Urness, Kari Urness; grandchildren, Evan and Alec Sitzmann; sister, Mary (Mike) Hodapp; sister-in-law, Janell Urness; special friend, Kathy Sletten; cousins, nieces, nephews, many relatives and friends.

There to greet Lee in Heaven is his wife, Kathy; parents, Howard and Maxine and his brother, Donald.

Memorials are preferred and will be distributed in Lee’s memory by the family.

I just interviewed Lee on Friday in Minneapolis for CNN. What a shock to hear he passed later that same day. In the short time I had the honor of knowing him I could tell he was a true gentleman: charming, well-spoken, family man, a real straight shooter. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

Condolence from Julia Pilson on May 22nd, 2017 5:39 pm

I had the pleasure of working with Lee during many Super Bowl events and remember him fondly. My condolences to Matt, his family and friends. May you find peace in the fond memories and stories of Lee and all he brought to your lives for so many years.

Condolence from Gene Leatherman on May 22nd, 2017 5:49 pm

Lee was an exceptional man. He was my team leader at the BCA for a number of years. One time we were working in Winona and he wanted to stop at a local restaurant famous for their fish and seafood. It was all you could eat fried shrimp with fries. We ate a couple servings. I was full Lee wanted a small serving of fries to top him off. The waiter told him it was only all you could eat shrimp. He trued to talk sense into them to no avail. He winked and smiled at me then ordered more shrimp orders until the manager came up and cut him off. We laughed many times about that mistake on their part not knowing who they were dealing with. Sorely missed. So sorry for your loss.

I played basketball with Lee at Hamline University and roomed with him two years in college and then after college ….until he married Kathy…we spent numerous times at his cabin on the Ash river and camping on lake Kapatogama drinking wine and beer while sharing meaningful insights pertaining to life’s problems. My wife, Patti, who worked with Lee at the BCA, and I will miss him a lot!!!

Condolence from Don Rubio on May 22nd, 2017 8:32 pm

My deepest condolences go out to Matt and the rest of the Urness family. Lee has been and will continued to be missed by the NFL transportation family. Lee made such an impact on everyone he ever met. To this day I have people that worked with Lee at Super Bowls almost 20 years ago ask me about him and how he’s doing.
The true meaning of a professional.
Rest In Peace.

Condolence from Renee and Jerry Cahill on May 22nd, 2017 8:52 pm

We will never forget such a wonderful, kind and giving neighbor as Lee. So many memories by the pond, grilling and 4th of July fireworks. He was always working on the pond, feeding the birds and planting beautiful flowers every year. Lee was, and you children are family to us. May his love light your life every time you think of him. I know his smile will never be forgotten.

Kari, Lisa, Matt
So incredibly sorry to hear about your Dad. Both of your parents were amazing people. Although it’s been an incredibly long time, I remember them so vividly and they truly left an impact on me. I want to send my dearest condolences from my whole family to yours.

Condolence from Cristine Paull on May 23rd, 2017 9:32 am

Kari, Lisa and Matt –
I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Lee on many Super Bowls and we had a lot of laughs and glasses of wine. Lee was incredibly nice and caring and was always quick to lend a hand. He left a big hole in our team and now in our lives. My hope is that all of your memories of Lee will keep him in your hearts.

Condolence from Chris Hagerty on May 24th, 2017 2:43 am

Lee and I go back to 1994, Super Bowl Atlanta. He was a principal player in our Super Bowl Transportation Team. For twenty five years we worked together on various projects and he always was ready and willing to do anything which would improve the quality of the event for the fans. We all lost a true friend. God Bless to the FAMILY

Condolence from Greg Jones on May 24th, 2017 3:40 pm

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Lee at the MN Fugitive Task Force and was partnered with he and Kevin Rickett on the Andrew Cunanan Top Ten Fugitive case. Despite the hundreds of leads and intensity of the media during the nationwide manhunt, Lee remained unflappable and focused on “just gettin’ the guy.” His bright smile, infectious laugh and incredible investigative aptitude put him in a class by himself. The hours he spent in a fishing vest sitting surveillance in a mini van paid huge dividends for the BCA, the MFTF and the people of Minnesota. Lee was one of the finest cops with whom I ever had the pleasure of working, but that still pales in comparison to the dedication he had to his family. What a great man. He will be missed. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Condolence from David Erickson on May 24th, 2017 6:25 pm

I played basketball in high school in Alexandria, Mn. with Lee back in ’62, ’63. I have not seen him since but have fond memories of his lanky frame, his contact lenses (our team would get on our hands and knees during more than one game to find each one that fell out) and his kindness shown to me and others. He was competitive and courteous at the same. I watched the interview of him recently on the Cunanan case and was glad to see his face and hear his voice. I thought of how special it would be to intersect with him again and, now, am shocked that he is gone. I send my sincere condolences to his family at this time of sorrow and loss. ‘May mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.’ Jude 2

Condolence from Larry D. Bergsgaard on May 24th, 2017 9:04 pm

I worked with Lee at the B.C.A. What I remember most vividly was Lee’s smile that even in the most difficult situations brought some cheer to my heart. Lee never shied from the difficult. I remember when he braved a brutal Minnesota snowstorm to hike through the Pine County forest to twist wires to continue a wiretap at a crucial moment. It was Lee who gave me the nickname of “Wong” … one he never tired of using.

Condolence from Char Hanson on May 26th, 2017 10:01 am

My memories of Lee & Kathy are from the years of raising small children. I’m sorry to see the kids, now adults, are on this sad journey. My sympathies & blessings to all of the family members at this time.

Condolence from Pastor Mary Boyd Hovland on May 29th, 2017 12:41 am

My sympathy to Lee’s family. He will be greatly missed. He impacted many lives through his work and fellowship with family and friends. May God bless his memory. It was a privilege to know Lee and his family as we grew up in Alexandria.
