Laura Mae Lureen, of Savage (formerly of Shakopee) passed away at the age of 44. A gathering of family and friends is at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation in Shakopee on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, 4:00 – 7:00 PM. The Celebration of Life Service is Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation, Shakopee. Pastor A. Paul Olson will preside.

It was a beautiful spring day in Shakopee on May 16, 1970 when Dick and Kathy (Radermacher) Rodenberg celebrated the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Laura Mae. She was the baby of the family, and her arrival made her sister Jenny’s wishes come true (Jenny had wanted a little sister since she already had two brothers). Laurie enjoyed growing up in Shakopee and especially liked tagging along after her brothers. She attended Shakopee High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and played softball.

After high school, Laurie attended Mankato State University. Even though it was only an hour away, Laurie got homesick for her family. So she left school and moved back home to Shakopee. She soon met a man by the name of Dave Trulson, and they became very fond of each other. Laurie and Dave got married, and they were blessed with two beautiful girls Ashley and Abigail (aka “Fabio” according to Laurie). Laurie and Dave went their separate ways, but they both continued providing loving homes for their girls.

When her girls were young, Laurie loved being outside with them. They’d host BBQ’s, play on their trampoline and go garage sale-ing together. She coached their soccer team, and they’d tag along to her softball games. They took frequent road trips as Laurie loved to travel. Some of their favorite spots were Duluth and Myrtle Beach. She also enjoyed going to the movies and passed on her love for film to her girls.

Laurie always had a strong work ethic. Her first job was at Koehnen’s Standard Station. Later in life, Laurie worked as a buyer in the food industry. She spent more than 20 years working for Super Valu. She then got a job with Nash-Finch and was again using her talents as a buyer. She was the only woman in her department, and according to her…she was the best! Laurie was a hard-worker, and all of her colleagues loved her.

At her 25th High School Reunion, Laurie reconnected with an old classmate, Scott Lureen. Scott bummed a cigarette from a friend (even though he had stopped smoking) just so he could have a chance to talk to Laurie. They went out on their first date a week later, and they were together ever since. Their love grew quickly, and Scott knew that he wanted to marry Laurie. He asked her parents and two girls for their blessing. Of course they all said, “YES!” Scott proposed on Christmas Eve and they were married the following fall. Laurie and Scott exchanged wedding vows on October 3, 2014. Laurie was a wonderful wife and step-mom to Scott’s children.

Scott and Laurie loved spending time with each other no matter what they were doing. They’d go to the movies and watch their favorite TV shows together. They’d cook and bake together. And every Sunday night they’d do a crossword puzzle together. Laurie would fill in the ACROSS and Scott would do the DOWN. They were a wonderful team and so happy together.

Laurie was full of life. She loved fishing with her dad, reading books, cheering on the Vikings and Twins, dancing at the bar with her girls, and going to the state fair to explore the Bazaar. Laurie was smart, driven and hard-working. She was a caring woman who would drop anything to help someone she loved.

The afternoon of Wednesday, December 24, 2014 Laurie joined the angels in Heaven much too soon. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by her husband, Scott Lureen; daughters, Ashley and Abbey Trulson; step-children, Samantha and Gabe Lureen; parents, Dick and Kathy Rodenberg; mother and father in-law, Alice and Wally Lureen & Family; dear friends and former father in-law, John (Tamara) Trulson & family; siblings, Jenny (Tom) Tschimperle, Joe (Cindy) Rodenberg, Dave (Rita) Rodenberg; nieces and nephews, Bill, Kacie, Robb, Syntia, Kristin, John, Nick, Jessica and Anna; great-niece and nephews, Jacob, Averie and Warin; other loving relatives and friends. There to greet Laurie in Heaven is her former husband, Dave Trulson, his mother and sister, Jeri and Patti Trulson.

The Lureen and Trulson families are served with honor, care and compassion by Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation

Condolence from Scott O’Brien on December 28th, 2014 9:04 pm

As a classmate of both Scott and Laurie I was lucky enough to be at the 25 year reunion to hang out with both Laurie and Scott. Since then I saw both of them from time to time and watched as their lives grew together. I’m sorry beyond words for the Rodenberg, Trulson and Lureen families, and specifically for my friend Scott.

Prayers from the O’Brien’s

I worked with Laurie at Nash Finch. But, Laurie was much more just a co-worker. Time and talk with Laurie was always invigorating. I am so very glad I got to know this astute, vivacious and big hearted person. I’m a richer person for knowing Laurie. I will miss her deeply.

What a loss this earth has suffered. I am not sure why God has taken her so early. I am so pleased I was able to work and play with her and wished I would have been a better friend and kept in contact with her more. My heart goes out to her daughters as you were her life and to her husband I know she was happy and life was good for her. She is missed

Ashley and Abbey. My prayers are with you girls at this difficult time of loss. I so loved your mom. Every time she saw me she said Hi mom. I loved having her feel like she was part of my family. I know Colleen and Brooke also feel like she was a part of us. She will be truly missed. But I know, deep in my heart and soul that she is still with us and most especially with you girls. She loved you so much. She is in heaven now with her heavenly father and there is no more pain, no more suffering and total peace. She is looking down on you both and will always be near you. Please reach out to us if you need us and remember always how much your mom loves you.

Condolence from Debbie Mofle on December 30th, 2014 3:11 pm

I am sorry for everyone who is grieving for Laurie especially her family and closest friends, I truly am. God took away a gigantic beloved soul. Even though Laurie was younger than me I always looked up to her. She was brave, kind and very loving. I worked with her at SuperValu and enjoyed every minute I spent with her. She did not have a mean bone in her body nor did she have anything but kind words to say. Laurie was a truly gifted person in many ways. She would give you the shirt off her back … which she did … and I will treasure it forever. Rest in Peace Laurie. You are thought of often. God Bless You.

Condolence from Julie Michel Widmer on December 30th, 2014 4:20 pm

I enjoyed being around Laurie and her girls over the years at family gatherings at Jens. Laurie was always so inviting and warm to us. It was fun to watch her with her girls and how committed and involved she was with them. It was special seeing all of you yesterday at the Friendshuhs. I saw quickly where Laurie got her warmth, wit and love of others when I’m with you!

Condolence from Becky Hanson on January 1st, 2015 8:22 pm

I just found out about Laurie’s passing. I was so honored to know and work with her out in Chaska at PPI when she first started to work for Supervalu. We hit it off right away and she made working there much more enjoyable. She has those amazing eyes and smile that went with her big heart. So happy to read that she went on to become a buyer at both companies. I haven’t kept in touch – busy with life but I have thought of her often throughout the years. She loved her girls so much and we had play dates together. I know she is with God and will be missed by so many. So sorry for her family’s loss and her newlywed husband sorrow. God bless you all.

Condolence from Susan Dahn on January 2nd, 2015 3:03 pm

My thoughts go out to Laurie’s and family and friends. I am so sorry for your loss.

Condolence from Eric Schaefer on December 28th, 2018 6:30 am

Kathy,
after more than three decades I have looked again whether I still find something of my host family in the Internet and find this announcement. I immediately recognized Laurie in the photo, clicked into the post and thought I could definitely find an address – until I understood what I was reading! I am shocked and sad! I see Laurie’s face in front of me, happy and laughing …

I think again and again full of joy and enthusiasm back to the time I was allowed to spend in your house. All the warmth and open-mindedness I experienced as a German teenager in the distant USA. That is simply unforgettable for me!

I am so sorry for your loss! I am with you in my thoughts, even if the great loss is now a few years ago.

Eric Schaefer, Germany
