Kari Searcy, age 33 of Lakeville, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2020. A private celebration of Kari’s life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020.

On July 7, 1986 in Minneapolis, MN, parents Randy and Barb welcomed their daughter, Kari Jean Searcy, into the world. She was the second of two children, the little sister to Ryan.

Growing up in Lakeville, Kari was an active and independent child. She enjoyed playing sports, especially softball, and camping with her family. Together they took road trips throughout America, visiting Yellowstone and the Black Hills. Spending time with family was so important to Kari—she was close with her brother and her many cousins.

After graduating from Lakeville in 2004, Kari continued her education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and later the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. From a young age, Kari loved animals. She was driven and determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a veterinarian. After receiving her doctorate, Kari was fortunate to intern in Seattle, WA for a year where she primarily worked with horses.

Kari eventually returned to the Lakeville area. She worked at various veterinary clinics in the south metro. Most recently she was with River Valley Clinic in Prior Lake. While Kari worked with all animals, she had a special interest in horses. Outside of work, Kari often attended concerts with friends and spent time at her hobby farm.

Throughout life, Kari put her heart and soul into everything she did. She was selfless and cared deeply for others. Despite enduring cancer, Kari’s determined spirit never wavered.

She is missed by her parents, Randy and Barb Searcy; brother, Ryan Searcy; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

Kari is preceded in death by her grandparents, Donald and Lucille Searcy and Ross and Eleanor Hastings.

Your daughter was such a gift to veterinary medicine. She always exhibited a spark, joy and humor when meeting with her patients…both 4-legged and their 2-legged parents. Kari’s family, a friend told me this “a good vet becomes a great friend” and that’s how I felt about Dr. Searcy. From the moment I met her I knew this is the doctor we need for my golden Mo. He came to her with “troubles”. And she did a wonderful job with him. She also loved our second golden Molly. I always enjoyed our talks about pups and life stuff! Last time I saw her we hugged. I’m so sorry for your loss. You raised a beautiful daughter inside and out! God Bless. Lisa, Mo and Molly

Barb, Randy and Ryan,
I knew your sweet daughter in Lakeville, where I taught at McGuire Middle School. Then, years later we met again as she became our cat, Littlefoot’s main vet. She was so sweet with him and came to the house to send him across the rainbow bridge. She was taken from all way too early, but especially from you. My thoughts
and prayers are with you.

Condolence from Dayna on May 27th, 2020 6:01 pm

She was our dog’s vet at River Valley. She was a wonderful advocate for our dog while we were working through his surgery and complications at the U of M, and we’re very sorry to hear about her passing. She seemed like a breath of fresh air and really cared about our mutt! Thinking of her family and friends.

To Kari’s family… my sincere condolences on the loss of your beautiful Kari. I met Kari professionally about 6 years ago and she became a friend. Last winter I had a dinner with her and you would never have guessed the battle she was fighting based on how strong and positive she remained. Her courage was inspiring. She was a true bright light and a genuine, kind hearted person. I feel lucky to have known her. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time. Kari will be missed by many.

Condolence from Mark, Julie and Tucker O’Connor on May 27th, 2020 8:42 pm

When we first met Dr Searcy at River Valley Vet, we knew she was the best Vet for our black lab Tucker. She was warm, caring, compassionate, and always had time to explain the best way we could take care of Tucker with his cancer. She was too young to leave this world, but we imagine she is now taking care of all the animals in heaven. Our hearts go out to her family.

Condolence from Cindy Sellin on May 27th, 2020 9:42 pm

Kari was always So kind to so many, in love with her animals, very brave and very determined. We all will
Miss her.

Condolence from Andrea Larson on May 27th, 2020 10:41 pm

I met Kari when she first got AP, but I really came to know her when my horse needed emergency colic surgery at the U. Kari was a vet student at the time and she constantly would check in me and give me updates and reassurance. She always had the biggest heart. I had so much fun with her in our riding lessons, watching her relationship with AP, and her grow into this awesome Vet and get her farm. She did accomplish so much in such a short time. She was the one I called when my family put down our dog at home. She always always was kind and really cared. She will be so incredibly missed.

Dr Kari was a joy to talk to, an excellent vet who LOVED animals: her animals, my animals, all animals. Whether she was examining my dog or checking on my horse, I was always happy to see her bounce into the room with that great big smile. I can’t even imagine the loss her family is feeling, but know we share your grief in some small way. She will not be forgotten.

Kari was one of my favorite classmates in vet school. She was always ready with a warm smile and thoughtful comment to improve my day. I will always remember my last conversation with her and my thoughts that she had become an equally warm, thoughtful and accomplished veterinary professional. Taken from us much too soon, she will truly be missed.

Condolence from Vicki Mitchell on May 29th, 2020 12:27 pm

Dr. Kari showed up on a Friday night to help my Sister’s lab cross the Rainbow Bridge peacefully. She was an angel even then.

Condolence from Shannon on May 29th, 2020 8:20 pm

This is so tragic, I remember meeting her the first time, of course under “colic” circumstances and she was so excited to tell me she just bought the farm up the road…and from that day on was there for me. Probably sorry she gave me her cell phone. Her passion and caring for any animal was so unbelievable and irreplaceable. RIP Kari, you were there at my worst times as well as my friends and family that you gracefully helped …. You were an angel on earth..

Condolence from Kara Arlt on May 30th, 2020 2:21 pm

I am so sorry for your tragic loss. Kari and I grew up together at St. John’s Lutheran church, junior high and high school. We lost connection when we went to college. A few years ago, my family and I moved to the Prior Lake area and we needed to find a new vet for our dog. I found Kari and immediately knew she would be the most amazing vet. It was so nice to reconnect with her in the last few years. She was so energetic and full of life and you could tell she just really loved what she did. She will will be missed! I pray that you can find peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Sincerely,
Kara (Larson) Arlt

Dear Randy, Barb and Ryan,

I was a classmate of Kari’s in vet school and we bonded instantly because we had the same birthday, today, July 7th. I had been thinking about Kari a lot this Spring and had planned on reaching out, so you can imagine, I was completely shocked to learn that she had passed. I am so sorry for your loss. She was such a vibrant life and I felt our stars had crossed on July 7th, 1986, leading us on to vet school and crafting a shared love of horses and all animals. Thank you for raising. and loving such a beautiful person. I feel honored to have known her and on this birthday and always, I’ll blow out a candle for her too. She is dearly missed.

Sincerely,
Kaylee Myhre Errecaborde

Condolence from Donna Taylor on July 22nd, 2020 10:12 am

We were clients of Dr. Searcy’s, and are very sorry for your loss. She was so amazing and kindhearted! We brought our Atticus to the clinic from the time he was 8 weeks old, she was the first vet he had ever experienced and he was the first mastiff puppy she had encountered as well. Every time we brought Atticus to the clinic he got so excited when he heard her voice on the other side of the door. She will be greatly missed by all of us.

My sincere condolences to the family for the loss of Keri. We were classmates at the University of Minnesota CVM. Keri was always pleasant and great to work with in group settings. My apologies for just reading about this in JAVMA.

May her memory shine through in each of us whose lives she touched!

REST IN PARADISE, KERI!

Condolence from Kelly Brown (Sovell) on November 12th, 2020 9:06 pm

I am heartbroken and in disbelief to hear of Kari’s passing–I recently moved and I was googling her name to see if I could bring my pets to see her and saw the news. I was a coworker of Kari’s when we were both working as vet assistants and both applying to veterinary school around 2008. I was there when she found out she was accepted to vet school–I can *still* hear her voice when she came out of the work break room exclaiming “I GOT THE CALL!!!” and we both screamed in celebration. It was such a happy moment. Life doesn’t make sense sometimes–it’s just so unfair that someone so genuinely full of joy and life can be taken so soon. I can say that my life was better by working with Kari and I regret that we lost touch. My heart goes out to her family–she was so special!

Condolence from Melissa Evamois on December 17th, 2020 9:25 am

I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Searcy’s passing. I will always remember her for her kindness and gentleness. She was always reassuring and offered so much comfort when my pets were in pain. I was not fortunate enough to know her well personally, and yet feel loss at her passing. It is clear she was a wonderful person and offered so much to this world. I hope her family and friends feel comfort knowing she touched many lives with her work.

The world is better for having had her in it. She will be missed.
