When death comes, it sometimes sneaks in without apparent warning, and so it was for Juvinus Alexander Pauly, who slipped away into eternity on April 21, 2017. Quietly and unexpectedly he flew to meet his maker.
Jiv Pauly, the son of Peter and Bertha Pauly, was born on August 30, 1931. While attending Jordan High School, Jiv was involved in many school activities: Acapella Choir, Boys’ Glee Club, Octet, Chorus, Speech (which carried him to state competition), and three plays in which Jiv acted in the romantic lead. At that time, he was referred to as “Pa.” He liked to listen to the Wayne King’s orchestra and Sunrise Serenade. Favorites were Maureen O’Hara and his mom’s swiss steak and lemon pie. Today his favorite probably would be his sister Bernice’s cooking.
After high school, J. A. Pauly, as he would often write his name, spent four years attending St. Thomas University from 1949 to 1953, during which he enrolled in the ROTC program. He spent his two-year requisite commitment in Edinburgh, Scotland as an Air Force Officer. After which, he returned to Scotland as a civilian for another one and one half years.
Returning home, he joined his sister Bernice and his brother Willy in their father’s business, the Scott County Oil Company, from 1951 to 2000 when the business and buildings were sold. Today the Broadway Market sits on that site.
After his mother’s death in 1986, he made his permanent home on Cedar Lake.
His lifetime was filled with encouraging others, supporting sports systems at the high school, and befriending people with his good will.
Actively involved in many community projects, Jiv served on the Jordan Development Committee and worked part time as city treasurer for a period of time. He was a Troop Leader of the Jordan Boy Scouts and known to all as The Voice of the Jordan Hubmen. Jiv also volunteered much of his time as a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was the announcer for the Fall Festival, served on the funeral luncheon committee, was a lecturer and communion minister. Jiv was also a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and participated in Catholic Aid.
In his retirement, Jiv found a great new love – the children of St. John the Baptist School where he served lunch, read stories to the students and joked with the children. He enjoyed their antics and their energy. And as he gave to them; they gave back to him.
Jiv’s lifetime was one of total commitment. He seemed to understand that every action, every passion, is a crowning moment for which one is responsible and that each opportunity to befriend someone becomes a time to challenge aloneness. Jiv touched the hearts of so many, and he will be deeply missed. He was always quick to greet friends with his signature point, special grin and one of his famous sayings, “Jesus loves you,” “You’re the man,” or just a simple, “Hey!”
Jiv will be remembered always by his loving sisters, Bernice Hoffman and Della Theis; sister-in-law, Dorothy Pauly; nephews and nieces, Gordy (Pat) Hoffman, Daryl (Susan) Hoffman, James (Jody) Pauly, Mary Jo Pauly, Ann Marie (Hiro) Watanabe, Peter Theis; four-legged friend, Brose III; other loving relatives and many, many dear friends. Jiv was greeted in Heaven by his parents, Peter & Bertha (Busch) Pauly; brother, Willy Pauly; brothers-in-law, Virgil Hoffman and Bob Theis.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation in Jordan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday April 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM with visitation one-hour prior at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Father Timothy Yanta will preside. Al Weierke, Larry Weckman, Robbie Whipps, Gene Steckman, Jim Colling, Chad Shimota and Dennis Tikolskey will act as pallbearers. Jiv will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Jordan. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be distributed in Jiv’s honor by his family.
A gentle man with a huge, warm heart now rests in peace, in the arms of the Lord.

For many years as a catholic kid growing up in Jordan, I literallly believed Jivy’s voice was the voice of god himself. Whether it was the Fall Fesival loud speaker, Hubman football games, or Easter vigil mass readings, Jivy’s voice gently boomed over all of us. As a little boy I dreamed of running out onto the football field and hearing Jivy announce my name. Later in life… long after that dream was fulfilled… I was able to share that story with Jiv, and his reaction was so sweet and humble. He simply thanked me, with a tear in his eye. He was such a special man… the free sodas at the gas station, a warm garage to work on my own car, the fixed play ground kickballs. When I think of where I grew up and what made my childhood there special, I can’t help but think of Jiv.
Jordan has lost an icon.

A very positive factor in a hometown upbringing has left us; annual visits by phone at Christmas and by eye at Cedar Lake will become major voids in this one’s life. Dick Nachbar

I want to thank the man who was a great leader for me through Boy Scouts, for being my first boss and teaching me work ethics I was able to use throughout my life. I will never forget you calling my name at football games and taking the time to take us water skiing at your home whenever we wanted.
My deepest sympathy to the family.
You will be missed….

It will be hard to image the neighborhood without you Jiv. Now I regret never asking how in the world you ever got that rope tied so high in the tree where we’d swing way out into the lake in front of your house when we were kids. You will be sorely missed. Phil, Karin, and Annika Ilg.

I loved reading this about Jivy, I only knew him as my dear sweet neighbor and friend…. God Bless Jivy!!

NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY, by Robert Frost
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower; but only so an hour.
Then each leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief, so dawn does down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I grew up next door to Jivy and thought the world of him and Willy. Watching the two of them plow snow off of the Pure Oil cement slab with the pickup truck and home made snow plow provided me with great entertainment. One more of the idol’s of my youth has passed. Heartfelt sympathy to Bernice and Della, and the family.

When my husband passed away and I returned home from making the arrangements, there was Jivy with a rose for me and he said “this is from Dick”. The kindness he displayed to everyone will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend and give Dick a hug for me.

Jiv, I remember you as such a gentleman from my childhood on up. I remember you and Willy at Pure Oil downtown Jordan and how you teased my girls when they were little. You always had a joke or a bit of encouragement for the youngsters. You touched every heart that you met! This community can only dream of having an individual try to fill your shoes or pick up where you left off. You gave more than most people ever imagine giving in a lifetime ! We will miss you and will remember you eternally. God will welcome you with open arms, Peace and the love of your loved ones that preceeded you. You are wonderful. Rest in Peace our friend! God Bless. May your family be at peace.

As a teenager, I’d pull into the station for gas. Jiv would fill up my tank with a smile and was always willing to look at the little things wrong with my old car. I will never forget his kindness.
My condolences to his family.

……with his jobs well done, his life well lived, his family, his community, his church, and most of all his God well served, Jiv leaves us, …………………..but with a giant void in this community and my heart. Sleep well, my friend.
