Irene Marie Jasmer, age 94, a current resident of New Prague, MN and longtime resident of Lydia, MN, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020, at Mala Strana Assisted Living and Rehabilitation Center.

A celebration of life will be livestreamed on Friday, May 15 at 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Fish Lake, by visiting Immanuel-fishlake.org and clicking on the Facebook tab. Dr. Rev. Brent Parrish will preside. A public service will be held later at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Fish Lake, in Prior Lake, MN. Condolences and memories of Irene can be left below, and mail cards to Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation, 104 West First Street, Jordan, MN 55352. Memorials are preferred and will be distributed in her memory, by the family.

On the family farm in Lydia, MN, Irene was first of nine children born to Emil and Helena (Dubbe) Kohout. Growing up during the depression, her parents instilled in Irene, that family was everything. This was always evident in her life. She attended Lydia School, through the Eighth grade, before returning to the farm, working, and supporting her family.

Turning 18, Irene stepped into the workforce, working various jobs. Her most rewarding career was that of being a wife and mother. She met Delbert Wallace Jasmer, through mutual friends. While he was away at war, they wrote letters to each other. On May 16, 1946, Irene and Delbert wedded at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Fish Lake. For the next 60 years, they settled in Lydia, where Irene and Delbert raised seven children, Darrell, Douglas, Vicki, Cheryl, Paula, Curtis and Robert. Years later, her commitment to the family extended to loving grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great great grandchildren.

Devoted to her family, Irene was also committed to her community. Irene was a member of the Lydia Community Club and a contributing member of the Lydia Historical Society. For eight years, she volunteered and was proud to be a driver for the Scott County Human Services. Irene loved supporting the seniors. But because of her son, Curtis, and his needs, the disabled held a special place in her heart. Irene was part of the community effort that established the Scott County Day Activity Center (DAC). She later became a direct support staff for the program. When she identified the needs for social opportunities for individual with disabilities, her and friend, Elise Svoboda created the Scott Lites. She also assisted as an aide for Anderson Bus Company, for many years. In hindsight, Irene was a head of time with advocating for opportunities for the disabled.

Irene enjoyed fishing, traveling, and playing cards. She spent countless hours in her vegetable and flower gardens, despite the frequent visits from the snake. Irene’s green thumb did not stop there. She had the most amazing and beautiful landscapes of flowers and shrubs. Everything in Irene’s life was centered around God. It was Him that inspired her to do His work for others and Irene did it all with joy.

Left to carry on the amazing and faithful life of Irene are her children, Darrell (Janet) Jasmer, Doug (Nancy) Jasmer, Vicki (Elmer Jr.) Lambrecht, Cheryl (Jerry) Chalmers, Paula Neisen, Curtis Jasmer, Robert (Christine) Jasmer; a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; siblings, Harry Kohout, Roman (Barb) Kohout, Ellen Hennen; sister-in-law, Hazel Kohout; brothers-in-law, Norbert Hennen, Richard Swift; other relatives and friends.

There to greet Irene home in Heaven is her husband, Delbert; grandchildren, Marc Jasmer, Andrew Jasmer, Joy Krautkremer; parents, Emil and Helen Kohout; siblings, Ruth Kohout, Betty Hennen, Bessie Janousek, Donald (Elaine) Kohout, Art Kohout; and brother-in-law, Dick Hennen.

Condolences for the family of “Irene Marie Jasmer”

Condolence from Sharie (Neisen) Walsh on May 13th, 2020 5:52 pm

Seeing Irene’s picture takes me back to Lydia and all of the fond memories I have of that time in my life. I smile as I think of our little community and what an icon Irene was. She was always so friendly and kind to everyone; always so welcoming and happy. As I read her obituary, I agree she was well ahead of her time as an advocate for those with special needs. What a wonderful person. My sympathies to the entire Jasmer family. (And I remember the legend of the snakes in the large flower terrace out front! I peddled extra fast past when going by on my bike… LOL.)

Condolence from Mark and Cathy Retrum (Hennen) on May 14th, 2020 10:35 am

I used to volunteer for Aunt Irene at the DAC in Lydia years ago, I can remember if there ever was a bad situation she could take it and turn it into a good one with her calm voice, and smiling face and if that wasn’t enough, she would put on some music problem sloved and everyone would be dancing. She LOVED to dance.

Aunt Irene – Gentle – Loving – Kindhearted. God has her in his arms, and she is at peace.

Our deepest sympathy to everyone.

Dear Jasmer Family–Your Mom was a beautiful lady, both inside and out! I have so many good memories of your Mom and Dad visiting with my parents, either out on the farm or at your place in Lydia. There was always a lot of laughter when the four of them were together. I remember Irene so generously sharing the fruits of her garden with us and we were always excited when we knew the Jasmers were coming for a visit! I find comfort in knowing that she and Delbert are reunited, and I smile in thinking of the two of them sitting around Heaven’s table with my Mom and Dad, telling stories and laughing as I remember. I am deeply sorry for your loss; please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, both today and in the coming days.

Condolence from Pam Killian and the Lydia Area Historical Society on May 16th, 2020 3:17 pm

We at the Lydia Area Historical Society wish to express our sympathy to all the Jasmer family. Irene was an important member of our group. She and Delbert were part of the group from the very start and hosted our meetings in their home until their move to New Prague. Irene and Delbert and your entire family have been very supportive our group. Irene’s stories and pictures of the Dubbe and Kohout families are treasures. We will remember her, miss her and honor her memory.

Condolence from Tamara Timmons Taylor on May 19th, 2020 5:32 pm

Irene Jasmer was a wonderful and caring neighbor. I have many childhood memories of playing with my friend Paula at their home. In my Grandparent’s later years Irene was always willing to help them, and I am sure that her help extended the number of years that they were able to live independently in their home. My condolences to the Jasmer family. Tamara

Irene was one of those people you meet in life and feel blessed for knowing them. She was a humble, hard-working, and selfless Christian that God put on this earth to especially love and serve those with disabilities, her family, her community. May God comfort all you who’ve lost her until you see her again.

Condolence from Robert Hansel Family on May 25th, 2020 4:00 pm

Dear Jasmer Family – We got to know and grew to love your Mom who was a neighbor to our Mom in New Prague. We often all sat together and shared stories of their family farm where my Dad and grandfather hunted when my Dad, now 91, was a boy. Our folks also shared many memories of dances in local dance halls, shared a love of the music of their day and together they recalled southern Mn band leaders – your Mom recited a poem for us on several occasionsr of those favorite band leaders – so fun to see them remembering their fun past.
Your Mom became part of our visits to our Mom, sharing hello’s, visits, and sweets! We know you will miss her dearly. Our deepest condolences .
