Betty’s Life Story

Betty J. Young

Betty June was born on March 29, 1927 in Eckman, North Dakota, to parents Charles and Emma (Gilchrist) Woods. She was the youngest of five children. Betty’s childhood years were spent in Eckman, until her mother passed away at the age of 12. She then moved to Bloomington with her aunt and graduated at the age of 16 from Bloomington High School.

At the age of 17, Betty enlisted in the United States Navy. She served during World War II and was stationed in Chicago. Betty met a young man named Robert Young, while serving in the Navy and on August 30, 1946, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Betty and Robert exchanged wedding vows. They were blessed with three sons, Paul, James and Joe.

Holding various jobs early on in life, most of Betty’s career was spent driving residents around the community for the Scott County Human Services. For over 20 years, she greeted people every day, as she welcomed them on to her bus. Betty retired at the age of 65.

With a deep love for horses, Betty grew up raising and riding horses. She passed this love down to her sons. She had a special way with animal and also raised a few cows, chickens and pigs. In her spare time, she loved driving her golf cart, fishing and gambling especially in Vegas and Canterbury Park. In her late 40’s Betty earned her pilot wings. Her true love was working in her vegetable garden, with a special focus on the tomatoes. Betty’s family will sadly miss her great meals.

She was a deeply caring mom, grandma and great-grandma and always put others needs first. She was never judgmental and always welcomed everyone into her life. As a resident of Shakopee, Betty Young was 85 years young when she passed away peacefully the early morning of Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at her home.

Forever loved, Betty will be deeply missed by her sons, Paul Young of Shakopee, James (Deb) Young of Hillman, Joe (Theresa) Young of Arlington; grandchildren, Annie Ringwelski, Annie Young, Cody Young, Jason Young, Joshua Young, Joseph Young, Taylor Johanson and Jacob Johanson; great-grandchildren, Daria Ringwelski, Keaton Young, Landon Hildebrandt, Angel and Legend Young; sisters, Elvie Peterson and Billie German; sister-in-law, Harriet Woods; many other loving relatives and friends.
