Dr. Akbar Abdul-Haqq, evangelist, author, teacher, husband, and beloved father, went to be with the Lord Jesus on May 20, 2019.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at Prior Lake Baptist Church on Sunday, May 26, at 4:00 PM, with private family interment prior to the service.

Dr. Haqq was born in northern India in 1920. He was raised by a loving mother and a most courageous father, who was a noted apologist for the Christian faith. Dr. Haqq gave his life to the Lord Jesus at the age of 24 during a college revival meeting. His memory of that day was vivid.

“I wasn’t sure what had happened, but I felt light as a feather, as if all my burdens were lifted, and I could fly.”

From that time forward Dr. Haqq prepared himself to be useful in the Lord’s service. He gained advanced degrees in philosophy, psychology, Persian, and world religions. He also married his college sweetheart (Vida), and started a family, living through the chaos and violence that followed the dawn of India’s Independence. The horror of those days made him doubt his future, and it was his father who provided him with comfort and a new vision.

“My son, don’t be afraid. You will survive these times, and preach the gospel all over the world.”

While serving as a professor and principle of a major academic institution in India during the 1950’s, Dr. Haqq was asked to be the interpreter for Billy Graham during Dr. Graham’s first crusade in India. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Graham invited him to join the newly formed Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and he never looked back.

After moving his family to the United States, Dr. Haqq became a noted evangelist, with an international ministry spanning some 50 years. He preached the gospel to millions of people world-wide, and saw thousands upon thousands come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Despite tragically losing his beloved wife to cancer, His faith in Christ never wavered. The Lord provided a wonderful new wife (Doris), and he found comfort and companionship during the remaining years of his ministry. His confidence in the Lord Jesus was absolute, and he spoke of it proudly to all who would hear.

“To believe in Jesus Christ is the easiest thing that a person can do. He never made a mistake, and He never told a lie. How easy it should be, to trust a person like that.”

Dr. Haqq is survived by his eight children: Miriam Prabhakar of Narsupur, India; Eb (Terri) Abdul-Haqq of Ballston Spa, New York; Emanuel (Jill) Abdul-Haqq of Belchertown, Massachusetts; Deborah (Mark) Haqq of Burnsville, MN; David Abdul- Haqq of Lutz, Florida; Hannah (Anand) Jillella of Atlanta, Georgia; Elisheba (Mark) Stevens of Belle Mead, New Jersey; and Jonathan (Rachel) Abdul-Haqq of Prior Lake, MN. He is further survived by 25 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren as well as one brother (Asghar).

It is loss of a Great man of God. He preached and many gave their life to the Lord. He was sharp and intelligent person with vast knowledge. He enjoyed debate with those who challenged Lord Jesus Christ. Lord kept Dr. Haqq to reach a generation and he did it well. I was closely associated with him. Sad to loose him but glad that he reached his ultimate destination.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends. May you find some comfort in the promise found in Revelation 21: 3-4 and 1 Thessalonians 4:14. Knowing that there is an opportunity to be reunited with loved ones.

Condolence from Mark Haqq on June 18th, 2019 8:19 pm

Abidiyah Akbar Abdul-HAQQ: By far the most spiritually powerful person I ever met, and of the grace of God walking with him.

My Daddy, Arshad, had deep earnest respect and love for his older Bhia Akbar, and I know they are having wonderful times up in Heaven above, and …. they will no longer need to argue theological points in Urdu, as they have ALL THE TRUTH! Because, Uncle Akbar was truly a “Servant of The Truth.” Amen. (As was Arshad a true Servant of the Truth.)

I believe it is a “victory” rather than a “loss” – the victory he achieved here, and all of us can be inspired by his wonderful and God-graced life. May the comfort of the Holy Spirit be with all who are feeling sorrow due to their loss of him – but at the same time be so very thankful to God for his life and how he impacted yours. That is how I feel about my Daddy, so thankful for his life, and Aunt Rashida, so very thankful for her and all she taught me. And for the lives of all of the brothers and sisters, from Uncle Salim leaving many years ago, until yesterday the oldest brother leaving his incredible mark here, and now to join the rest in heaven. Amen. I am so thankful for all of them and the blessing of God upon Uncle Akbar. Thank You Lord!

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” (James 1:12) Amen.

I just came to know of Dr. Haqq home going. He was a great witness of to the living power of Jesus Christ, and labored hard to preach about the kingdom of God. I met him once in 1973 in Dallas. His daughter Miriam is married my cousin Prabhakar , who is at present with our Lord Jesus Christ.

I have just come to know about the Home Going of Dr. Akbar Abdul Haqq. My sincere condolences to you all, his beloved family. When I was 19 years old, I responded to Dr. Haqq’s invitation to accept Jesus and Lord. Now after 40 plus years of ministry ( served as a Missionary in many part of North India and currently leading Serve India Ministries that God helped me to found – with 8000 plus native pastors serving across 27 states of India) I look back to that day gratefully and thank the Lord for Dr. Haqq. The crusade was organised by the Tirunelveli Diocese of Tamilnadu in 1977).

Dr. Akbar Abdul Haqq’s preaching at Otterbein College’s convocation in 1964-65 tipped me to Christ. I am grateful.

Condolence from A. S. Mathew on March 19th, 2020 3:53 pm

I have heard him speak when he came to our State (Kerala) half a century back. His sermon was scholarly, crisp and to the point.

When I met in 1974 accidentally in a hospital, Pastor Ben Hadden of the First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga who had an international TV program ( Changed Lives), he came to the Christian faith at the Billy Graham Crusade in Miami, do you know Dr. Haqq, he is my friend was the first question. He was the editor of a News Paper ( Miami Herald) Lawyer, and worked for the CIA. I told him that I have heard him speak.

Dr. Haqq was a very well respected person of the Christian world. We lost a great soldier of JESUS. Heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family.
