A resident of Prior Lake, MN, Michelle “Shelly” Kartschoke was only 46 years of age, when she passed away unexpectedly while hiking on Mount Crested Butte in Colorado. Most important in Shelly’s life was family. She was a beloved wife, devoted mother, loving daughter and sister. Shelly’s greatest passion and devotion was that of being a mother to Nicholas, Kaitlyn and Joshua.
The Kartschoke family will greet guests on Friday, July 22, from 4-7 pm at Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake and also one hour prior to the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, July 23, 11 am, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Prior Lake. Pallbearers for Shelly will be Daniel Dehnert, Marcus Dehnert, Thomas Dehnert, Ronald Kartschoke, Andrew Kartschoke and Dale Lutz Jr. She will be laid to rest at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Prior Lake, MN.
Harold and Margaret (Vogel) Dehnert proudly announced the birth of Michelle Ann on October 27, 1969 in Fort Atkinson, WI. The oldest of four children, Shelly had the lifelong task of trying to keep her little brothers in line. As a young girl, she participated in dance and ballet. As Shelly grew, she turned her focus to sports. She enjoyed playing basketball, as well as participating in track and cross country, where Shelly excelled. The Dehnert family enjoyed trips to Canada camping and fishing. They also relished road trips to visit relatives including the unforgettable trip to Texas.
Graduating from Jefferson High School in 1988, Shelly furthered her education at UW La Crosse, earning a degree in IT. She worked her entire career for Cargill, Inc. Shelly was always trying to improve herself and with the support of her company, she went back to school to earn her M.B.A. at The University of St. Thomas. Shelly started in the IT department and worked in various positions in her career, before settling down in Risk Management.
Through mutual friends, Shelly’s life was enriched meeting the love of her life, Christopher Alan Kartschoke. Their love flourished and on July 12, 1997 in Jefferson, WI, Shelly and Chris declared their love to each other. They had a deal, whoever found a job first…the other would follow. Well, Shelly was offered a position at Cargill, so they soon found themselves moving to Minnesota. First living in several suburbs of the Twin Cities, Shelly and Chris planted their roots in Prior Lake. Here, they raised three beautiful children, Nicholas, Kaitlyn and Joshua.
Shelly loved to travel and passed this passion on to her children. They saw Mother Nature’s beauty through countless hikes and bikes trips. They have seen the sights of Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and Disney World to name a few great memories. Shelly was such a devoted wife and mother. She loved attending all of her children’s school activities or sporting events. Nicholas, Kaitlyn and Joshua were her life and you could see that sparkle in her eyes. Shelly and her family also enjoyed spending time with family at her parent’s cabin near Rinelander, WI and even a few vacations with parents out west. In the last days, she was enjoying the sights and sounds of Colorado with her family and Chris’s dad.
The legacy of Shelly will live on in her beloved husband, Chris; children, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Joshua; parents, Harold and Margaret Dehnert; brothers, Daniel Dehert, Thomas (Melanie) Dehnert, Marcus (Bethany) Dehnert; father-in-law, Richard Kartschoke; brothers-in-law, Ronald and Andrew Kartschoke; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Shelly was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Mary Kartschoke and her grandparents.

Shelly will be greatly missed! She was my manager for two years, and since then we would meet up for lunch to catch up. She adored her family, and would always give me updates on what everyone was doing now and tell me all about Nick, Kaitlyn and Josh and how they were doing in sports. You now have an amazing angel watching over you and she will be forever in your hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

We are very saddened by the loss of Shelly. She was a beautiful person inside and out. We have many fond memories from our time at UW-LaCrosse and all of the alumni gatherings. I have always enjoyed chatting with Shelly at the annual Saturday afternoon picnic. She will be greatly missed but forever in many, many hearts.

My deepest sympathies to her family. I grew up with Shelly in Jefferson. We went to grade school and high school together. We played sports together and had many laughs throughout those years. The sad news traveled through the church community here in Wisconsin. Her family is in my prayers.

To my dear KK and all the Kartschoke family: I was a teacher at St. Michael School. I also tutored Kaitlyn after school for about one school year and grew to love her quiet ways and smirky smile. My heart breaks for all of you. You have lost a devoted mother and wife in a very tragic and awful way. Shelly’s lovely children are a testament to the love she had for her family, and I’m sure was reciprocated back to her. My prayers are with you, continually. May you feel the love the those around you and may that bring a degree of solace. God be with you all.
Sharon Laatsch
Words can not express how sorry I am for the loss of Shelly. I have so many memories growing up with Shelly and her family next door. So many times I would see her car next door while she was in college, or from Minnesota and I would say “Oh, Shelly’s home.” So, so sorry for the family’s loss of Shelly, she was such a kind soul and my family and I will miss her and her family will always be in our prayers.
Andrea Bergamini
I’ve known Shelly for about a year since I joined Cargill. What a lovely person. She was very passionate about what she did and caring for the people she interacted with. I’m a better person as a result of having known Shelly and will carry her in my thoughts. My deepest condolences to you during this very trying time; know that Shelly did a lot of good, that her memory won’t be forgotten and her impact was far-reaching.

Chris, Nick, Kaitlyn, and Josh, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Shelly hired me at Cargill in 2006, and was an amazing boss. Throughout the years we would catch up on our families and what was happening in our lives. I could tell the pride and joy she had when speaking of her family, she just beamed and laughed.
She was a beautiful soul and will be greatly missed.
Wishing each of you peace to bring comfort, courage, & strength to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your heart.

My deepest sympathy to your family. This is shocking and sad news. I worked with Shelly for 20 years where she just spoke to our group recently. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. Shelly was my mentor when I started Cargill about 20 years ago! She was a great friend and teacher. Throughout the years we had kept in touch and was happy we now worked in the same group so we could see each other more often. Fond memories about Shelly are being shared across Cargill. She has touched so many people throughout the world! She was such a caring person and also so proud of her family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Linda Hansen
I keep reading what everyone is sharing about Shelly and could not agree more with their words and feelings.
I feel fortunate to have been able to work with Shelly, even if for a too brief a time. My respect for her was further confirmed and continued to grow each time we met. Shelly really cared about people. Taking time to listen, provide advice and suggestions, then being there for support. She cared about each person, not just in workplace situations, but also wanted to know everyone personally.
Shelly was really great at work with all she accomplished, but her family was most important. I could tell how proud she was of each of her children. The pride showed when she talked about each one.
There was always a bright light when it came to Shelly. Her always on smile and positive attitude was addicting. I’m repeating others words, but she was a kind, compassionate & beautiful person. I wish I had more time with her.
I believe she will continue to watch over her family, now with the angelic wings. May God Bless and provide the needed comfort for the Kartschoke family.
Rafael Santos
I’ve had the privilege and honor of meeting Shelly at work during a long term assignment in Minneapolis. Such a great professional and woman. We worked together with several projects in the recent years, having always been a pleasure to partner on every assignment. To the family and friends, be aware that Shelly will be missed from across the world. This Brazilian guy here will carry the best memories of her to life. God bless you on this new stage of life. With most sincere sympathy.
Jean Anderson
I was also a co-worker and friend of Shellys at Cargill. Her cube was lined with photos of her family, and she updated them regularly. Dance pictures, sports photos, picnics, travels, she loved her family. She always had a calendar with photos “from each month of the prior year of her children, Halloween costumes, Christmas,”. She was a joy to work with. Calm, funny, energetic, enthusiastic and supportive. I will miss you Shelly. My deepest condolences to her entire family.
Jennifer

My very deepest sympathies to you all on the sudden loss of Shelly. Words fall short at this time but my thoughts and prayers go out to you.
I had the pleasre to work with her for a few years here at Cargill. In fact, the last meeting that I was in where Shelly had a presentation, she was describing her role but the most important thing to her was her family and time with them. She made a point to mention that and I thought it showed how much she cared.
May time and good memories bring you peace, Lisa Rosenow

I met Shelly last month when she gave a presentation to our team here at Cargill. Her presentation started with a “family first” focus, she beamed talking about how proud she was to be a mom and to be blessed with such great kids. As a fellow Prior Lake / Cargill mom, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I tell my kids if something should happen to me, I’ll always be in their hearts. Shelly will always be in yours.

My heartfelt prayers go out to both the Dehnert and Kartschoke families… The memories I shared with Shelly during High School will always be treasured ones. Our Spring Break travels to South Padre, Homecoming games, and the many high school shenanigans. If Shelly wasn’t surrounded by fun, she created her own. I’ve known Shelly now for about two years and met her twice in person. Past 3/4 year we (and others) were working very close building the new teams, and spoke with her several times a week. We build a strong relationship. Besides her passion apparently we shared same type of humor, and always teased each other in line of our cultural differences.
I will miss her, as a colleague and friend.
My deepest condolences and she will not be forgotten.
Luc Schollaert
I had the privilege of working with Shelly for more then 8 years in Cargill, sharing the goods and bads of Risk Management, her favorite topic and her passion. Please go home and hug your spouse/kids/family, reach out to everyone in your life that matters to you….lets appreciate how blessed we are and how short our lives here on earth are. It shouldn’t take a tragedy like this for us to reflect on our own lives and realize how lucky & blessed we are.
Brenda McKenney
I met Shelly six years ago when I started my new role in Risk Management. Very quickly, Shelly became a mentor and good friend. She looked out for everyone and deeply cared about those she met. Her love of family was evident as we always shared what each other’s family was up to. We shared a lot of “motherhood” stories and a lot of laughs as well. Shelly had such a positive impact on many lives. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Our heartfelt condolences to the whole family. Chris and I were teammates and roommates at UW – La Crosse back in the late 80s and early 90s where we majored in “running” and minored in “school”. We were neighbors with Shelly at the Oakland Street Apartments near campus, and I can remember when Chris and Shelly first began dating. They made a great couple and were meant for one another. There were so many fun times and memories at UWL and later as we began our careers in Minneapolis. Chris definitely married up! Suzanne and I remember when Nicholas was born and what a great mom Shelly was and how happy Chris and Shelly were to be parents. We all learned a lot about child rearing from them. Shelly was a kind, intelligent, and authentic person and will be forever missed. Chris, peace to you and your family. We are here for you buddy.
Tom and Candy Bubolz
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Shelly’s family. Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

I knew Shelly from the time she joined Cargill until I left 2 years. She was my co-worker, supervisor, and friend. In reading what others have written here, it is easy to see that many consider her the same way. These messages come not just from our local community, but from individuals around the world that Shelly touched with her presence. I can add nothing to what has been said here, but to add my condolences for the family.

Chris and family,
We just learned of the accident. We are so saddened by your loss. We know Shelly and your daughter Kaitlyn through IGM as they are on team together. Shelly was always smiling, talkative, and loved her family a lot. She was definitely dedicated to her kids activities. I enjoyed many conversations with her. May God give you peace for you and your family.
Nancy Wirth Drahozal
Chris & family –
I met Shelly when she started at Cargill and we quickly became friends. Shelly was smart, driven and dedicated to her career. She was also kind and patient and everyone enjoyed working with her. I once asked her what she liked best about being a manager and she simply replied “I really like helping others learn and grow”.
But it was always clear that being a wife and mom was her highest priority and greatest love. She loved to talk about her kids and she was so proud of each of them. Everything she did was with a focus of taking care of her family.
I am so sorry that this tragic accident happened and that it took away such an amazing person from your lives.
Karen Johnson
Kartschoke Family – I am so sorry to hear of the loss. Shelly was a wonderful person. I remember chatting with her a few weeks ago at work. We talked about Nick getting his driver’s license. It was so nice meeting you all tonight. Shelly was a beautiful soul with a lot of compassion. I had the pleasure of working with her through the Cargill Adopt a Family Program, where she adopted a few families over Christmas. Even though she was an IT Manager, she always had a smile and always said hi when I saw her. May God provide you comfort and give you peace today and moving forward. God bless each of you!

THE ROSE BEYOND THE WALL
Near shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light,
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall
Through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice’s length
And unfolded itself on the other side.
The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing its fragrance more and more.
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve
And make our courage faint and fall?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive-
The rose still grows beyond the wall,
Scattering fragrance far and wide
Just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forever more.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was Shelly first manager at Cargill. Shelly always was a great employee but more importantly a great person and friend. When we would run into each other our discussion was hardly about work but rather about family. She spoke of her family with such passion. Two weeks ago she spoke at a team meeting I was in about her current role. She started out the presentation giving some background to the group on herself. Most of it was about her family and how she loved doing activities with all of you. Know that she died really enjoying her time with you on the mountain. May the sadness and emptiness you currently have be filled with all the great memories and love you had. Peace be with all of you

Chris,
Words have failed me so far. I’m sorry that it had taken so long to reach out to you, but there was never anything that would be right. I’ve been thinking of you and your family during this time of grief and sending my thoughts and prayers towards the heavens for peace, for Shelly, and for you.
With deepest sympathies,

I am deeply sadden by the news, there are so few words that we can share to comfort the loss and ease the pain. I offer my condolences and prayers that God will fill you with His peace and understanding.
May you find comfort knowing that you are surrounded by many loving and caring people.
