Larry Mechtel, age 84, of Shakopee, entered eternal life on Sunday, Nov. 26,2017.

Larry was welcomed into his family by parents Alex and Francis, and his siblings, on Dec. 4, 1932.

Larry was one of 7 children raised on the family farm in Marystown, where he also attended the Catholic school. At an early age, their father Alex passed away. Their mother Francis, Larry and his 6 siblings, pulled together, and with determination, hard work, help from the community, and faith, made their lives on the farm a success. After graduation from school, Larry was ready for the next chapter in his life.

Larry proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean war. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he started his local truck driving career. After many safe driven miles, Larry had the opportunity to acquire Shanus Truck line. As an owner operator, he put in many a long day on the road, and then in the garage, keeping his rig running smoothly. A detail orientated book keeper named Laurie kept the paperwork end of his business running efficiently. He delivered local merchandise with safety and a smile, until he parked the truck one last time and retired.

Early in his retirement, he married his secretary and beloved wife, Laurie. They shared the love of companionship and enjoyed their time together. Their winters were spent in the Florida sun. Larry and Laurie enjoyed travelling, raising dogs, going on walks, and spending time with family. Larry also liked to help his brothers on the farm they grew up on in Marystown, and lending a hand where needed to family and friends. He had a knack for fixing most anything mechanical, and appreciated the opportunity to challenge himself.

Larry acquired health issues as his age added up, but a healthy routine tied to discipline, kept him active. When needed, the skilled care givers at Rochester Mayo, St. Francis Hospital, and other local doctors, would fix him up and send him on his way. His family would like to send a special thank you to the wonderfully talented doctors, nurses and staff at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, where Larry was treated with respect and dignity in his final days. Your care and concern will always be appreciated.

Larry is preceded in death by his wife Lurline, his parents Alex and Francis. Sisters Adella (Harold) Schmitt, Bernice (Albert) Kechle. Brothers Phillip, Vernon, and Florian, brother in law Patrick Mahoney and nephews Ted Mahoney and Ed Schmidt. Many in-laws.

Larry will always be remembered by his sister Verona Mahoney, his nieces Karen, Patricia, Terri, Laurie, Corrine, and Kathleen. Nephews Ken, Steve, Rick, Duane, Mike, and their families, which included 20 great nieces and nephews combined.

A visitation and mass of Christian burial was Friday, Dec. 1, 9:30-noon, at the Church of St. Joachim and Anne (St. Mark’s) in Shakopee. Interment at the Catholic cemetery at St. Mary of the Purification, Marystown following the service.

Thanks Uncle Larry for being a great role model. Your hard work ethic with attention to detail is something to admire! Your kind and gentle soul was generous to most who needed. You lived the Catholic lifestyle with pride, and we’re disciplined in character. Thank you for your service in the Army, and fighting for our freedom we sometimes take for granted. Thank you for being who you were and sharing it with the world, you sure made God’s country a better place by your contribution to it! Rest in peace Larry, and may you share heaven with your family and friends! Nephew Mike

My family lived across the street from Lurline’s parents home in Naples Fl. My Dad, George, passed in 2009 and we sold the house in 2010. I always wondered what happened to Larry and Lurline. I went by the old neighborhood today and was told that Lurline’s house had been sold and will be torn down, as was my dad’s. Larry was always there to offer help when I needed something while trying to get dad’s home ready to sell.
