What Should I expect from a funeral home?

Trustworthy, local, friendly, and approachable are the qualities that you should look for in a funeral or cremation provider. You need more than just the choice of a casket or cremation options. You need guidance, a good listener, and resources that will help you make decisions and cope with your loss. Please feel free to share this with others so in turn they may benefit from this information as well.

Consider these questions when making your decision in choosing a funeral and cremation provider.

 Family involvement?

Will the planners listen to our needs?
How can my family be involved in choosing a method for people to express their sympathy?
(Examples: flowers, donations to the deceased’s favorite charities)
Are children welcome throughout the services?
Do you offer specific “child friendly” services or resources?
Are there additional charges for these services?

 What types of  services are available?

(i.e. traditional funeral, cremation, gathering of family and friends, private family service, memorial service, graveside, cremation witnessing, special family consultations, etc.)

Can I choose a custom service?
If I request “special touches,” how will these be handled?
If I choose cremation, can I still have a viewing and/or gathering?
Does the funeral home have it’s own crematory or do they outsource cremations?
Can you handle a request for donating my body to a medical research or educational institution, if I desire?
Do you help with additional arrangements (including coordinating the clergy’s involvement, burial, helping survivors secure benefits to which I may be entitled, etc.)?
Do you have resources available for me and for my family to help us through the grief process?
Who completes the necessary paperwork & obituaries?

Can I pre-plan my funeral or cremation?

Do you provide a written contract that explains my rights and obligations?
If I preplan a funeral, does this mean I need to prepay?
Will the account grow in value?
Where will the funds be deposited until the funeral services are provided?
If there are excess funds after the funeral, will the excess funds be refunded?
Can I alter plans after I’ve made initial pre-arrangements?
Can I transfer these plans to another funeral home in case I move?

 What support do you offer after the funeral or memorial service?

Will there be follow up after the funeral, providing help with unforeseen details and with other needs I have?
Do you have resource material on grief?

How much does a funeral or memorial service cost?

Are funeral homes priced differently? How does your funeral home compare?
Will you provide a detailed price list of services and items?
Does the list include items such as embalming, caskets and other details?
Is a service fee added to the price of  items that you pay for on our behalf?
(i.e., flowers, church/clergy/music honorariums, obituaries, luncheon, etc.)
