LeRoy Helmbrecht Born on December 24, 1934 at the General Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, LeRoy was the son of Jacob J. and Marie E. (Peterson) Helmbrecht.
LeRoy proudly served in the Korean War for 4 years with the United States Navy. After returning from the service, he trained to become an electrician and plumber. LeRoy took his training and worked at a power plant in Detroit. Deciding to take a different path in life, LeRoy moved back to Minneapolis to become a mechanic and later drove truck over the road. In December of 1998, he retired from USF Holland.
On November 18, 1986, LeRoy met Olive “Ollie” Fields through a dating service. Their first date was dinner at Perkins where they talked for about 4 hours. Their loved grew and they were married on November 19, 1988 at St. Mary Magdalene in Burnsville, MN.
Enjoying woodworking, LeRoy had a woodworker dream shop, filled with all the latest tools and machines to create beautifully projects. LeRoy also loved his John Deere riding tractor and attachments and was an avid model train collector. Having to share his birthday with Jesus, December 24, his family always made sure his birthdays were special and he was very proud of his special day. He was a member of the American Legion Post #447
LeRoy was an avid learner, strong and a good hearted husband and step-father. He was 75 years young when he passed away peacefully on early Friday morning, July 16, 2010 at Crystal Care Center in Crystal, MN.
He is loved and will be deeply missed by wife, Olive “Ollie” Helmbrecht; step-daughters, Marilyn (Curt) Ferrie of Akeley, MN, Cathy Johnson of Rush City, MN, Jill (Greg) Washkuhn of Spooner, WI, and Shelly (Lori Dreier) Bangerter of St. Paul; 6 step-grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Peterson of Minneapolis; special nephew, Bob Peterson and many other nieces and nephews.
LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents and many half-siblings.
Pall bearers will be Greg Washkuhn, Eugene Boyd, T.C. Boyd, Lori Dreier, Bobby DeGray and Matt Nelson.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 20 from 4-7 PM and also one hour prior to the Celebration of Life Service on Wednesday, July 21 at 10:30 AM, all at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake. Pastor A. Paul Olson will officiate. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN
Memorial preferred and will be distributed in LeRoy’s memory by the family.
